Do you have any spare Molex connectors on the PSU so you could instead use some Molex->SATA splitters?

Thank you. After removing the failing drive, and then changing to a Molex->SATA splitter, things have (thank God finally) resolved.

It's possible, or a bad power connection, any splitters in use?

Yes, I have a 4 way power splitter set up on both of my hard drive carriages. The parity used to be on a direct connection instead, but I was trying to figure out if it could be a bad power cable (not splitter) so I swapped that side to another brand new splitter.

Check/replace cables, you also need to check filesystem on the disabled disk.

Well I ran the filesystem check, and the system still immediately disables that disk when I try and mount it. I was able to switch to the second of the new drives to a different SATA and power cable (this would be the third one) and it cleared pre-clear just fine.

Of course as soon as I swapped that drive in and started the parity rebuild, I started getting a constant spin-up-chirp-spin-down loop on what has to be either that drive or the parity somehow. I cannot believe that I would have this many bad drives, so am I looking at a bad PSU altogether or something else? SMART looks fine for all disks, system logs look fine, and the disk logs are clear. I stopped the parity sync because I am worried I am going to wreck an otherwise good drive.

I've replaced the power and SATA cables twice, so I'm not sure if that could mean an issue with the board connections. The connections themselves are firmly seated.

I'll try the file system check tonight

  5. I have a disk in my array that I am trying to replace due to it racking up enough SMART errors that it is being disabled. I purchased a couple of Recertified Drives from Seagate and ran preclear on them one at a time. My issue is that both of them failed preclear, so I am wondering what are the odds that they BOTH are bad? My case has limited space so I utilized the same power and SATA connection for both, swapping in the second drive after the first one failed.

I did some searching of the interwebs and the forums for the errors, and it SEEMS like they might just be bad, but I was hoping for a second opinion before I go through reaching out to the vendor for a replacement.

    Preclear logs attached

    Thanks for any help!

  6. So is this an app that comes configured incorrectly, or just needing a lot of setup? The Support page and ReadMe both make it sound Plug & Play outside of selecting the folder to scan, and of course there are the script suggestions in this thread, but I have not been able to get that far as I cannot even get it to scan. I can manually change the permissions, but I feel like if that is a necessary step too get things working the app should either do it itself, or, if that is not possible, it should say it somewhere obvious.

    I am so confused.

So you're no longer using an ASM1166 card - you're using a SAS card. In that case the firmware is irrelevant and if the SAS card isn't detected you have a different issue.

Sorry, I think you may have missed one of my posts. The original item I ordered was an 8 port SATA card, which did not work. When I was told that was a bad idea, I ordered a 6 port ASCM1166 card, which did not work. After more reading a lot of people were recommending a SAS card, so I bought a StarTech card, which also did not work. I figured the firmware you were talking about would not apply to the SAS card, however I did try the update utility on the 6 port ASCM 1166 card, and that was not detected by the utility.

As has been said it's highly unlikely the 8 port card will work as it uses a port multiplier.

The very first post in this thread recommends the ASM1166 6 port card. I've linked the one I have and it works fine.
Most 6 port ASM1166 cards work fine.

And also previously discussed is that the startech firmware applies fine to generic cards, I've upgraded mine, I've even written a blog post about it https://docs.phil-barker.com/posts/upgrading-ASM1166-firmware-for-unraid/

I'm afraid if you ignore all the advice on which card to buy, and buy an 8 port instead of a 6 port, and don't read the previous posts - you're going to continue having bad times :(

Okay, so I have unpacked the previously mentioned *6* port SATA PCI-E expansion card, plugged it into my main PC, ran the Silverstone firmware update utility mentioned in your blog post, and was unable to update the firmware for the simple reason that the utility did not detect any compatible hardware. I tried it in another PCI-E slot with the same effect.

To be clear, I read (and have read) every post on every page of this, and many other threads, searching for answers. I have spent the last month working on this off and on, and have taken so much advice on the "right" way to do this, or the right things to buy for this to work. I am frustrated because everything I have used *should* have worked with little to no extra effort, at least according to every other post and guide.

So should I just be buying a Silverstone card then?

I appreciate the advice, though I am no longer attempting to use the 8 port SATA card I originally linked, as mentioned in my follow-up. I did actually end up trying the 6 port version of the ASM1166 card with the same results from both PCI-E ports on the board. I know at least one of the ports work as I had been trying to set up the new system with my old GPU and that worked fine.

What I am attempting to use now is a StarTech PCI-E card utilizing 2 mini-SAS ports with mini-SAS to SATA cables to hook up to 2-3 of my current drives. This new card seems different enough that I was concerned that the firmware would not be compatible. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09FY9FBTN?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1) It was my understanding that the cards using the mini-SAS connectors were a better option than the addon SATA cards, but this is my first working with these cards, so if this is the same thing I am more than willing to try the firmware. I just don't want to brick the card and be unable to get a refund if it doesn't work.

It might not be controllers issues, if the cards are not detected there would be no drives in Unraid. Your diagnostics with one or the other could provide more details on that.

Diagnostics attached. In case it helps, the Parity drive as well as one of the storage drives are connected now to the StarTech card that was just installed. From the unRAID dashboard they show as missing

  12. OMG.......

Okay, deep breaths. I had already ordered it before posting, so I tried a 6 port PCI-E SATA 1166 expansion card, booted unRAID, and nothing. Drives not detected. Okay, keeping calm.

I instead ordered a StarTech Non-RAID card (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09FY9FBTN?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details), installed in my case, booted unRAID, and.....nothing. Drives not detected. I have to assume that I am missing some vital step that other people who list these items as "plug and play" with their builds are otherwise doing. My luck cannot just be this bad.

Also currently dealing with my new cache drive having somehow not having any of my docker settings, despite following a very straightforward tutorial I have used before, but that is another blood pressure spike outside of this thread.

ASM1166 is a 6 port controller, the one you linked has 8 pots, suggesting it has a port multiplier and so not recommended.

LSI is a safer bet since they are made by LSI (or Avago/Broadcom now), unless you get a fake one, these Asmedia and JMB controllers are different, the chips themselves are good but a no brand controller based on one might be good or not, when possible suggest buying from known brands, like Startech or Syba for example.

Appreciate the response. LSI cards seem to be pricey unless you get a used one, and potentially may run a little hot, especially for a smaller case. Not sure how true that is. Unfortunately this redo has already gone way over budget

  14. So I am learning to never undertake a server upgrade unless I really want my blood pressure to spike.

My old case was a Dell Optiplex 7050, which was a great starting off point, as well as cheap, but if you know the model you will also know that it only has room for a total of 3 spinners (two of which can only be 2.5") and one M2 slot. This worked fine for me as it was a free gift and therefor a cheap way to wade into the unRAID waters. The issue is that being restricted to 2.5" drives really limited my storage volumes, and after nearly reaching the 8 TB storage I needed to upgrade. I am, however, pulling out my hair attempting to get it to work.

I purcahsed a MSI MAG B660M Bazooka DDR4 Motherboard for a Fractal Node 804 case which I thought should be enough given the 4 SATA ports and two M.2 slots (One NVMe and one SATA). It took me a few times (and a board replacement) with one of my hard drives not showing up to realize that using the SATA M.2 slot disables SATA port 8 on the board. Okay, annoying, but I can work with that. So after reading this thread I got a PCIe SATA expansion card to allow for enough ports to make the setup work. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DFSC5R4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

The issue I am running into is that this card is not recognized by the board, nor unRAID, no matter which PCIe slot I install it into. I would love to do a firmware update, as recommended earlier in this thread, but I cannot for the life of me find a firmware update for ASM1166. Any seemingly related firmware update comes from unverified sources, which makes me jittery. After some digging, as well as begging for answers, most everyone that has used this same card never had any issues with their unRAID setup, and it was simply plug and play right out of the box. I am already going to try a replacement to see if I just got a lemon, but I am hoping there might be some pearls of wisdom that can be offered to hopefully help.

Sidenote, but I also am a little confused by some of the contradictions in this thread. The initial post seems to recommend both PCIe SATA expansion cards, and HBA LSI SAS/SATA cards. However reading all of the posts there are people saying that the PCIe cards are trash and will tank your performance, and then that is followed by multiple posts singing their praises and how they are perfect. To be fair I see this same seeming contradiction elsewhere, but it still is a little frustrating.

Rant over, and thank you for any help you can provide.

Is that the server's LAN address?

If you connected with "remote access to server", then you will not have access to the LAN IP address. You need to use the server's tunnel IP listed in the webgui

If you want to access the server's LAN address then choose "remote access to LAN" instead.

    sure

It is related to DNS. See the "About DNS" portion of the first post here: https://forums.unraid.net/topic/84226-wireguard-quickstart/

Thank you SO much! Connecting via the tunnel IP FINALLY fixed this. You are amazing
