    Heatsinks: ??

(Question: Are the passive heatsinks you can get from natex with good case airflow and fans enough since you can't overclock xeons or are 3rd party heatsink / fans still required?) I was hoping to not have to spend $200 on i4 noctua coolers if I don't have too.

Sound Cards: I have one pcie xonar dg laying around. not sure what I'll do for the other one. Maybe usb?

Does this look like a reasonable build? What do people recommend for some cheap ECC ram. 32 or 64GB and heatsinks?

    A couple of notes.

1.)  You may have a hard time getting all of your equipment in an Air 540.  It's possible to do but it may require a bit of customization. The board takes up more space than one thinks.

2.)  It seems easier to buy the Natex config with the memory as well.  I believe others have tried to price it out separately and unless you find a screaming deal you're better off getting it in a package.

3.) Heatsinks from Natex won't be enough to run it with any load for too long.  You can pickup whichever 2011 cooler you think works.  I ran mine for a while on Hyper 212 coolers and they worked well.  You'll also have to experiment with the cooling options built in to the system as it can be somewhat picky when you don't run it in one of the Intel P4000 cases.

  2. Sorry about the pictures being so huge.

System is up and formatting. I ran the memtest -- using the small heat sinks that the Notex board shipped with the temp was 100c instantly. With the I4s I ran it for 5-10 minutes and topped out at 40c. Was pretty stead between 38c and 40c

Does anyone have a link to a chart of what the lights on the backpannel mean?

I have a flashing amber light.

This PDF should have a light diagnostics guide starting on page 120.

  3. What are people actually using for CPU coolers on the Natex boards?  It appears some are using the Noctua I4 but theres also reference to them not fitting without modifying the fan or raising it up on the heatsink.

I just installed the I4 and the clip on fans would basically touch the RAM if I installed them flush to the top of the heatsink. I moved them up a few millimetres and I hope that will work -- I don't see why it wouldn't but I don't know much about cooling so.

Are you able to share a few pictures of your setup with the I4s on your setup?

  4. Got last night a natex combo, but after plugging it (just the EVGA 220-G2-0850-XR without any add-ons) I cannot start the system.

There seems to be a power issue, the LEDs get lit at the same time and power off cyclically. Any pointers?, the PSU, which is new, was working fine with another MB.

Double check everything you connected on your system.  I just booted mine up with an EVGA G2 750w over lunch today and it worked well.

  5. Yeah, I'm working on getting the CPU temps setup.

Very pleased with the Natex combo.  I still have a lot to figure out.  My transfer speeds are still capping around 40-50 MB/sec (previously 30-35).  Not sure what else I need to tweak though?!

What are you running for CPU Coolers?  I've seen reference to the Noctua I4 having issues with fan clearance over the RAM sticks.
