  1. I have been trying to load UNRaid on a 32 Gig USB Stick from My Linux (Debian) box.  I have syslinux installed on my linux system.

I have  searched for installing instructions, but all I have found are several years old.

The following is what I have come up with:

Procedure Used To Submit For Help

    Download UNRaid Zip File 6.8.3

    Save To Download shemp_software/unraid-6.8.3

    Unzip File (unzip unRAIDServer-6.8.3x86_64.zip)

Format USB Drive As Fat 32 (Using disk program) (Takes About 30 Sec.)

Name = UNRAID (All In Caps)

    Mount UNRAID USB Stick

    cd /media/gemckee/UNRAID

    cp -rf shemp_sotware/unraid-6.8.3/* ./

Open Linux Terminal (Not On USB Drive)

    cd ~

sudo umount UNRAID (sudo umount /media/gemckee/UNRAID)

Open Folder Where UNRaid Files Were Unzipped (shemp_software/unraid-6.8.3)

    sudo bash make_bootable_linux

Check Weather Or Not To Use UEFI (No) (Or N, Makes No Difference)

    If Failed, Run Again

    Remove USB Stick

Install In New Machine & boot to USB stick. Get “BOOTMGR is missing message”

When I put the USB stick in  the future UNRAID machine I receive the message
    BOOTMGR missing

The machine will boot other USB sticks.

Any specific suggestions on what I am doing wrong is appreciated.

    Thanks

  2. I didn't mean highwater = 100G,  I should have said highwater and min free space 100 G.  My bad.

It's been years since I put al lot of the files on my unraid system.  I started at Version6.3.3 and recently upgraded.  I believe I downloaded the files and put them in the proper share.  IE put a movie in share Plex,Movie, (movie name).  I don't recall installing a number of files on the hard disk itself.  Meaning in did not put files on a partition on /dev/sda thenl unraid on this disk.

As far as my wanting to move files around, I was thinking of moving the files from /dev/sda /dev/sdb etc.  I just looked and realized I can't see files that way.  Now I know what you mean about screwing thing up.  I will look at Midnight Commander, but I can't find it.  I am assuming it is run from the unraid system, but where is it?

  3. Ok to start off, I think I messed up when I originally setup my shares.

    My file structure is:

    Plex

         Movies

              (Movie Name)

         TV Shows

              {Show Name}

                   (Series)

                        (Episode)

         Music

              {Artist)

How I originally set up my shares were:

    High Water

    Min Free Space = 100G

Automatically Split Only top 3 Directories

I have all 8 TB drives

What would happen, a drive would fill up to where only 35 Gig was free, then say no space left although there was more space on a different hard drive in the share.

After reading more on the documentation and different support questions, I think I should set thing up to High water = 100 Gig.  (I'm guessing the max size of movies would be about 70 Gig). I should also setup the structure to be most free to balance everything out.  I presently have 6 drives that the Plex share uses.  I should automatically split only top 2 directories.

If this is correct, please let me know and if I am wrong, what should my setting be.

The second part of my questions is some of my physical hard drives are 99% or more full.  I would like to move the movies using the terminal  and the linux move command to move the movies to a physical hard drive within the share that has more free space.  Should I do this with the array running or should I stop the array.?

  4. No firewall set-up blocking outgoing uploads.

I want to thank everybody for the help, but I must terminate this effort.  What was on this disk was not that important and I can recreate it.  It seems like we went down the rabbit hole and I am wasting to much time that I need to spend on other projects.

Thanks Again.  I wish we could have figured this out, but for me, it would only be an educational experience.

    Thanks Agaiin

  5. I have ublock origin but that shouldn’t block outgoing messages.  I have the zip file on my desktop machine and that is where I'm attaching it to this message which is also on my desktop.  When I say drag files, they drag to the box at the bottom of this page, and it says upload failed and I get a message block that has an explanation mark inside a triangle and a  -200.  I can not type in this message area until I click OK .  The same thing happens if I do a choose files choosing the zip file which I have in the Downloads file of my desktop machine.

On version 6.3.3 the zip file was written to the /boot partition of the unRAID usb stick.  I assume that it isn't written there any more.  If it is, then I could shut the unRAID machine down and remove the stick and copy it.  If it is only written to the /boot directory if I tell it to save it there, I can't do that.  When I tired that, it looks like it opened a blank terminal that I could not do anything with.  It was just a white screen with nothing on it and I could not type on it or possible move it.  I tried to move it to see if something was off screen but no luck.  Also when I tried it and tried to save it to the /boot directory, i never had a option of where to save it. I had the unRAID logo with waving bars waving from about midnight when I went to bed to about 9 am this morning when I killed it.  Still nothing.

  6. I ran the diagnostics but I can't find the resulting zip file.  At present, I am controlling the unRAID server from a remote machine.  When I go the display on the unRAID machine, the display is huge and overfills the physical display.  I haven’t found a way to reduce the size.  When I open a console terminal, that window is so large, I can't move it around to get to any of the controls

Where can I find the diagnostics zip file from the remote machine.

    Thank.

  7. The update worked, but I have a problem that I don't know if is related to the upgrade.

I have an 8 TB hard disk that was showing up under the old OS and it only had about 50 Gig of space left.  After I did the update, I received the message that that disk had no file system.

The smart data says it never failed.  The different parameters that smart monsters said they were either pre-fail or old age.  Smart also said it passed.  I did not run the smart tests after I did the update so the data may be from before the update or after the update.  I don't know

I have another 8 TB drive that I can put in its place.  Should I do this and should the system rebuild the data?  The data is not terribly important, just that it would take a long time to re download.  Or should  I just remove the existing disk without a file system and treat it as a new disk?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  8. I am ruining unRAID 6.3.3 and have been for several years.  I recently had a problem and although I have fixed it, it was suggested I upgrade to the latest.

I tried the process of going to plugins, and update from their.  I get the error message https://s3.amazonaws.com/dnld.lime-technology.com/stable/unRAIDServer.plg....failed (invalid url/server"

I then tried the same but manually  typing in "https://s3.amazonaws.com/dnld.lime-technology.com/stable/unRAIDServer.plkg".  I received the same error.

How to I update my unRAID server or should I start from scratch.  The only plugin I have is the preclear plugin and I have no VMs or apps installed.

If I start from scratch, how do I do it?  Should I use a new USB stick and download and install the OS, then setup my complete system with all the shares, then transfer the license?

I probably could really use a step by step instructions.

    Thanks In Advance

  9. I know what format does.  That is why I was surprised when UNRaid said that one time and that time only that I needed to format the disk.  That is the only time I did a format on any hard drives on my UNRaid system.  I said the New Config did not take very long because I don't recall it taking any time.  I was not sure if it would be instantaneous or take hours.  That was just some information that I though might be helpful if the New Config  should take a measurable amount of time.  Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Its good to know I don't need to format old parity drives in a new system.  The only disk I would format are disks that  have data on them that I had already copied to the new system.  The idea for formatting the drives that I copied data from is so I know there is nothing on them that could potentially confuse how I would be setting things up.  If I format the drive, then I know there is nothing on it and it would be like using a new drive.

I have an unused computer similar to the one I am using for my UNRaid machine, except that the number of processor cores are different.  That machine was working fine, till I shut it down because I am now using a different computer for what it was used for.  That should help alleviate any concerns about hardware issues.  The only common things from the old (present ) machine and the new machine would be the hard drives.

  10. I checked this disk ending in pry before I installed it in the UNRaid box.  It had data on it.  When I did the New Config, it said something to the effect that it would do what you said and , for lack of a better description, take each disk and put it in the UNRaid based on what was on the disk.  After that was done, UNRaid did a parity check at which time all the data on disk 3 was gone.  The New Config part did not seem to take very long as opposed to the parity check.  I did not format disk 3.

I just finished going through all my SATA hard drives regardless of the size and none of them had files on them except for one that had Music on it and it compared to what I still have on UNRaid for the Music disk that it replaced.

I still can not access any of the video files that are one any of the shares that disk3 is part of.  I'm beginning to think I should just start from scratch as laied out above instead of wasting more time.  In starting from scratch I can do an upgrade to the latest level of UNRaid and possibly reorganize my layout.

  11. The original disk 3 from a year ago was ending in pry.  That disk had data on it.  I installed it in the disk 3 slot and did the new configure.  The system did a parity check that took 3 days & 7 hours.  That disk now had no data on it.  The confusion on what disk I formatted was caused when the hard drive I had in the disk 3 slot failed and the system said to replace it.  I put a new drive in and the system said I had to format it, then the rebuild happened but when the rebuild took place there was no data on it.  Since that disk was empty, and I didn't feel that the format was required, I put a different hard disk in disk 3 slot.  The rebuild took place and again no data was installed on it.  I then (per your suggestions) installed the old hard drive serial number ending in pry that had data in it.  I did the New Configure and UNRaid performed a parity check.  This took 3 days & 7 hours.  When it completed, that drive had no data on it any more.  I suspect somewhere along the line UNRaid thinks disk 3 should be empty and attempts to make any disk installed an empty disk.  As far as I know now I do not have any  disk that had been installed as disk 3 that may have any data on it.  I think the hard drive with serial number endiny in pry was an original drive in my UNRaid set up.

  12. OK, it took 3 days and 7 hours.  When finished it said rebuild complete with 0 errors.  Disk 3 now is empty.  (I lost 8 TB of data that was on that hard drive).  I am back to where I was when I started this recovery.

My plan now, unless somebody had better suggestions, is I plan of doing the following:

Down load latest stable of UNRaid.

I will remove all my hard drives.

I have 2 unused 8 TB hard drives I will use.

I will format both parity disks and the empty disk 3.

I will use one hard drive for parity and the other drives as data.  I will copy data from the remaining drives to the newly set-up UNRaid set-up.

After I remove the data from the drives that have data on them, I will format those drives and install them as more data drives.  When I am finished, I should have at least one unused 8 TB drive left, which I will install as a second parity drive.

I will then try to recover any missing data from my online backup or from other locations I have on the internet.

Am I missing anything?  I know this will take a long time, but I think all my options have just put me back in the same place.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks

  13. I got got to the step of selecting New Config.  I have a choice of retain the current configuration - Apply or Done.  Nest to the statement Retain Current Configuration I have a box that says None Or All, Parity Disks, Data Slots, Cache Slots.   I would assume I select data slots then done, but I don't want to screw thing up any more than I have already.  Is selecting data slots correct then apply or done?

  14. OK, so I don't screw things up more, how do I do the New Config/Rebuild Parity?  \

I assume I shut the array down and remove disk 3.  From there do I bring the array back up?  What would be the specific steps.

If you don't mind, could you tell me how to do it step by step so I don't muck thing up worse than they are?

Also thanks for all your help!  It is really appreciated.
