  1. MATT

Thank you so  much, I found the issue.  Let me first say I am working with a old Domain setup my people that are long gone.

The problem was the AD shortname
when we add windows computers to the Domain we use
    Domain.mydomain.org or  Mydomain.org

I notice if I left my Shortname Blank in the unraid setting the logs said something that I had not seen see before.

    May 21 12:01:08 PHSX0020 emhttp: shcmd (6526): /usr/bin/net ads join -U 'administrator'%***** |& logger
May 21 12:01:08 PHSX0020 root: Failed to join domain: Invalid configuration ("workgroup" set to 'mydomain.ORG', should be 'mydomCPDC2') and configuration modification was not requested
    May 21 12:01:09 PHSX0020 emhttp: shcmd (6529): /etc/rc.d/rc.samba stop |& logger

I Changed the shortname to what was suggested in the logs and it joined the domain.
Now the only thing on my wish list is ISCSI .
    ?

  2. I would like ISCSI datastore for a big reason

we are trying to mount it in ESXVM as a Datastore and we must have Iscsi.

I would like to use this as a Backup storage where ESXI can mount and save to the storage

Is link that the unRAID server is plugged into green or amber?

    Green

When you do a file copy in windows its showing 11.1Mb/Sec But i dont really trust Windows Copy speed numbers.
what do some of you see ? in windows and from unraid at at the same time.

  4. Less be clear I only added a 2nd nic to the source server to see if it would help. still getting 20kb/s (showing on the unraid  server)
when adding a 2nd nic did not work I tested a transfer from other source server on the same switch same 20kb/s

What should i be expecting for for a transfer rate 1000MB port switch, 24port switch but only 2 computers on it.

If you use bonding, then beware, that the switch must support this - if not, then you have the answer, why the trasfer is slow.

The Server that is teaming is only one of the two we tested from. Also when we first found this slow speed we added the 2nd nic but no change..

Once we tested on 2nd Source and seen the same thing i started to think it must be a setting or the unraid box or Drive speed because i did not add a Cache disk.

I did not add one thinking the HardDrives are fast.

  6. Hello i notice that when i copy files lets say 3GB ISO file, I am getting a network trans of 20kb.

The Hard Drives i have are 7200 64MB Cache
1GB Network Card Connected to a 1GB 16Port Switch (with only 2 Devices on the switch)

The Source server has two NICS teaming both Gig Nics
My UnRaid has only one 1Gb Nic.

as a Test I connected a 2nd server to the same switch running off SSD and moved File from the Server to the unRaid share. Same Speeds.
What should i see with GIG-to-GIG 3Gb file Trans Rate? More than 20KB right?

Any suggestion how to Rule out the network or the hardware?

  7. John, I was asking the Lime Tech Admin who posted on Wednesday, he said he had not done much AD testing after the last update.

for the size of the business you can get any better than this product, just need to know if this domain issues in the current release.
If no bugs found in the current version,  I need to understand how Linux talk to domain so I can find the issue.
Could be something with how DNS is setup that would only impact Linux.

The logs just say it can find the domain, yet you can ping the Domain by short and long name.
the DC and unraid server are on the same VLan and on the same Switch. I don't understand how the process cant find the domain.
Windows does a Broadcast for "Domain.org" and one of the DC will Respond with its name and will also provide a list of DNS list of DC Names.
This is how Windows knows witch server to ask to join.

Windows Joins the domain without issue, so I am thinking we have a bug or the software  process is not the same between windows and Linux.
Could be I am missing a Domain service that helps Linux.

How this software works on the domain is the key so we must have a POC to get buy-in from management.
Once we know this works in the domain and with our tools we will be buying the software and Configuration services so its setup in the best way.

Make sure under Settings/Network setting the first DNS server IP address points to your DC.

What version of Windows server are you connecting to?  We haven't done a lot of retesting of AD after updating our networking to support VLAN's - could be an issue here.

Anyone have something I can try..looking bad here to my manager.

  9. Yep Setting are pointing at 2 of the 4 DNS servers.
Each of the DNS Servers are Domain Controllers.

The Servers are Windows 2008 R2

BUT... The Domain is still running 2003 AD Database. (I know, I know but we had a few technical reason we could not upgrade the Domain yet.)
When I did a SSH to the server I can ping the Short and long DNS Domain name and both ping back to the domain server.

  10. Tonight I checked all my DNS setting and started over with all the setting and I stil cant get it to join the domain but i am getting a new error.
pr 11 21:18:14 PHSX0020 root: Failed to join domain: failed to find DC for domain mydomain.ORG - Undetermined error

I checked dns for correct DC lookup and it going to the correct IP.
Doing a ping mydomain.org and it find the correct IP for the Domain server.
Windows clients and join without problems.

When windows Join a domain it does a Broadcast looking for a domain server to reply. I dont know if this is how unraid works or not.
the unraid server is on the same Switch, Same VLAN, Same IP subnet

    Any Suggestions?? please??

  11. Seems like most the post on this subject is real old

I am setting up a POC for my boss so I am still under the trial of unraid, but its my understanding it should not keep me from joining a windows Domain.

Server has static IP, DNS is pointing to each of the DNS servers that happen to be a Domain Controller.

I have been trying a few Versions of FQDN for the domain and nothing works.

I get an error “Failed to join domain: Invalid configuration ("workgroup"
But enable SMB Yes (Active Directorey is set.

  12. #2 & 4 : Dont understand why the Parity disk must match the larger Data Disk,, But i have a feeling this sbject may get real deep. I am Better off just saying OK..move on. :)

#8 : I was thinking of a Hot Spare where you have a disk that is not added to a data Array pr a Parity. Example, lets say i am out of town for the weekend, I have a Disk that goes bad. UnRAID would see the disk was lost and take the hot spare and add the drive to the Array and then start building the data up. When i come back i pull the bad drive out and put a new drive back in and its now the spare.

  13. I am new to this so i am sorry if i did not find a post about this.
I had a few questions that I had not found a Clear or clean cut answer on.
Not wanting to post many questions, thought i would post once to get a few answers

I am on Version 6.3.3, the Plan for my box, is file storage letting my ESXI server copy VM Snapshots to this backup storage server.
In other words Off site backup server.

    Questions

    1. I think i know what the Parity Disk is. This Disk has the mathematical formulas used to understand what data is missing when a data Drive is lost or damaged.
Swap new Drive and it Rebuids all the data that was lost. Is this correct?

    2. Does the Parity Drive needs to be as big as the full Data Array.
I have seen some post that it should be as big or bigger than your largest Disk, but Some say must be the size of the data Array or bigger.
If the Array is 6TB, do I need a 6TB Parity Drive?

    3. in 6.3.3 the system lets you add more than one Parity Drive, what is the point?
    A) 2 Parity Drive is Mirroring the 1st, letting you lose one drive?
    B) 2 drives offers more Parity Disk space?

    4. How do i know if the parity disk is getting full?

    5. I seen people say do not use a SSD as a Parity Disk.
Other than the cost is there a technical reason? What about SATA Drives with Large Caches like 64MB or a Hybrid Drive. Example 2TB 7500RPM with 8GB SSD Internal Cache

    6. If you can use a Hybrid Drive with 8GB Cache, do i need a cache Disk?

    7. Does UnRAID have a way to SYNC data between two servers? Example Two servers on the same LAN and they work to stay in sync?

    8. Is there a way to have a Hot spare Disk that can jump into in as a Data Disk or a Parity disk?
