Probably missing something but having issues passing through an EVGA 1080 to any VMs, I get the usual black screen. This is an existing VM that worked with a 3080 previously. I have also tried configuring a new VM but same issue. I can connect via VNC ok of course.
I have attached some logs, let me know if you need any more information.
Oh, i successfully downloaded the BIOS directly using SpaceInvaders script.

thanks, very useful. so just to be clear a ASM1164 based card would be fine with SSD's connected for a cache pool?
-
Ok, is there a list of HBAs that do have TRIM support for SSD's?
-
ok, seems to be ok now, reseated HBA and rebooted. Regarding the HBA and TRIM, I was under the impression that this card did support TRIM. The WD Greens will be gone by today and replaced with a couple more MX500 1Tb's

Just checked the sys log and there are lots of errors. please see attached.

hi, tried a few things to sort this issue out but going round in circles. Brief story, I had 4 x 250Gb WD SSD drives in a BTRFS cache pool. I was running out of free space so I decided to upgrade them to Crucial MX500 1Tb x 4. I replaced the first 250Gb with a 1Tb and all was ok and ran like that for a week with no issues. I have now replaced another but I am
getting the drives now appearing in Unassigned devices. I have tried maintenance mode and run a check, no issues, tried removing from UD but they come back. I get a message saying one of the 1Tb drives I is missing from the pool. I can browse to most of the shares on the cache except the /mnt/user/system (says too many files).
The only thing I can think of is I did something wrong when reassigning the cache drives before I mounted the array. Any help would be appreciated.

ok, all sorted!!! 2 new memory sticks were the issue. Replaced them and now everything is ok, will return them asap.
-
Ok, just updated the BIOS (from A06 to A09) and it has not fixed the issue. I will try a different memory stick that i know works, then run memtest.

I have setup a new server, it is constantly freezing or halting I guess. It can stay up for between 20-50 minutes.
I have tried removing dockers and hardware but it still does it. I am trying to add a disk as well but because it freezes the pre clear never finishes.
Attached is the syslog and diagnostics zip files.
Dell T20, 16Gb RAM, 1 x 4Tb parity, 1 x 4tb WD red, 2 x 1Gb SSD cache.
-
thanks, sorted that issue. I have another though as my server keeps freezing. will start another thread.
-
I have a 4Tb parity drive, and a 4Tb data drive all working fine. When I come to add a new 4Tb drive, it recognises the new drive, I have pre-cleared it, I assign the drive and try and start the array but it just stops saying there is a new disk. I don't get the option to format the new drive? Help please.

Strange thing..... I have a working VM, however if I edit the VM and change the CPU allocation, it completely changes my XML. Removes lines, adds lines, in fact its like a Win 10 template now. Maybe a bug in beta 21?
-
ah ok. vt-d is enabled in the bios....
It must be something else that is causing those errors. I'm on 6.2.0-beta21
Interestingly: http://ark.intel.com/products/52214/Intel-Core-i7-2600K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz says that my processor doesnt have vt-d!
ah my bad. assumed it would be ok.
-
There is no option to enable iommu in the bios that I can see.
HVM is enabled though.
Is IOMMU a requirement for VMs?
Look for VT-d in the BIOS, i suspect it will be disabled. Just enable it (VT-d is Intel and IOMMU is AMD)
-
have you checked in the BIOS? CPU should be fine.
-
Well, I think you are doing something wrong.
But without any more information (xml-config, screenshots, etc.), I could only guess...
Are you using the default "Server2016" template that comes with unraid?
Can you confirm, that your vDisk is at least 30G big?
Did you select the "viostor->w2kr2->amd64" folder when you were loading the driver?
I had no trouble in 6.1.X with a OVMF virtual machine and on 6.2 beta it runs just as smooth.
Installed Prev. 4 yesterday and Prev. 5 today.
thanks, yes maybe. although i have many other vm's working fine. i suspect i have done something wrong but will double check tonight.

Server 2016 would be Win10 kernel and Win10 VMs were working with Win8.1 drivers.
I had no issues with the 2012R2 drivers back in v109, so I would use the latest stable/beta version of the 2012R2 drivers.
tried both of those but it never recognises the hard drive is there.

hi, does anyone know which version of the VirtIO driver ISO i should use for a Server 2016 VM?
-
So I have two questions about this topic.
1. Can I passthrough a unassigned SSD for a VM?
2. Can I make a separate pool of just SSD that is NOT in the cache? I would ideally have a separate pool for just VM's. Not sure if that is possible as of now.
1. Yes, use the method above. I have just done it for a 1Tb WD Black drive, works like a charm.
2. I am not sure this is possible, i guess if you motherboard has a raid controller you could create the array and you will end up with a single volume.

Just working through the guide and run into a small issue. My install appears to hang, i type the command to boot from the bootloader and the apple logo comes up and the progress bar works its way across and just stops 3/4 of the way.
Any ideas as to what is wrong? X99 system, 2 x Nvidia cards, latest version of El Capitan.
I have other VM's working, Win 10, Win Server 2016 and OpenELEC.
Thanks in advance.

old thread, but... i am in the middle of a version 6 unraid build. my board is an Asus X99-Deluxe, with no onboard GPU. I have a GTX970 in the first slot which i have used to install unRAID. I want to use that card for a windows VM, is that possible or will i need another card?
-
Thanks for the reply. I have a 5920K and a 970 card. So if I wanted to use it on its own, say putting a Windows 10 VM on it, would the I/O speed be ok?

As Nicktdot said, unless we know if your M.2 drive is AHCI or NVME, your question cannot be answered.
M.2 is as vague as an "optical Disk", which could be CD/DVD/BluRay/etc. A Bluray-Disk won't work in a DVD-Drive altouth both are "optical disks"
Unless we know the type of M.2 we can't tell.
But you can probably answer your question yourself, after reading this
TLDR;
- AHCI "should" work as any other SATA-AHCI SSD
- You can mix any disk in the cache pool, but the slowest drive would set the speed (so mixing M2 with SATA would be a waste)
- NVMe is not yet supported but it "can work" outside of the array.
It would be best to be specific about your devices, what manufacturer/model (Mainboard and M.2 Disk) are you using?
no worries, sorry.
