I think the biggest issue that you will have is doing the initial setup and config.  Once that is done, things smooth out considerably but almost need physical access for the initial install and troubleshooting.  I guess it would depend on where you are in the world and what consultation you are looking for.  What did you have in mind?

I have 3 unraid builds that I am supporting as multi-headed gaming machines, usually it's not difficult, but when things go wrong, I usually restore from backup instead of troubleshooting the issue.  A lot of issues can be prevented with the right setup- so it's important to get it right the first time and heavily stress all the VMs/dockers before determining stability.  The primary functions of the system also need to be run for testing and using those can be tricky to max without real world resource usage.

does any other solution on the market which one working smoothly ? And my plan will not work with UnRaid?

What is my pain right now:

    - is it possible to boot from USB UnRaid connect, connect my NVMe PCI drive (with already installed Win 10) and use it in that way.

and if something going wrong, I just delete the USB and boot with my NVMe PCI again whithout any de-installation of Win 10.

    Afternoon,

Finally followed this video to make a MacOS VM. For whatever reason Mojave wasn’t able to be downloaded; kept failing at ~4.5gb.

At any rate, what is involved in the process of upgrading High Sierra to Mojave? Is it as simple as upgrading through High Sierra or will that brick something?

Anything you guys can tell me about updating a HighSierra VM to Mojave would be awesome!

Thanks a ton, your favorite Newbz... 🙂

I think you posted into the incorrect topic)

What you are trying to accomplish is pushing the borders of the normal expertise you will find here. Because of that you will find that not all of your questions will be answered.

I have a one server that has dual Intel Xeon 2670 and 96gb RAM. This server works best for flexible VM work as you are proposing. I have 5 Win 10 VM on this server and create and destroy many more on an ad hoc basis. But I don't pass through any video. I find pass through really isn't flexible for my needs. Requiring 1 video card for each VM just kills it for me. I find Microsoft RDP best for connecting to these VM in spite of what grid runner suggests. This is ok for normal browsing and office work. Try it and see if it works for you. The beauty is that dedicated video cablng is not required, and dedicated GPU are not required. The downside is that video is limited for gaming, streaming and other GPU intensive stuff.

Basically just follow grid runners first video about windows 10 VM and ignore video 2. Then connect to the VM with windows RDP from a laptop and test it out. This is flexible VM at it's best.

Hmmm for me using RPD is still create a pain while I'm using it on local PC)

You can use embedded graphics for unraid but you won't want to use it on a VM

heh, really. So yes if it's, looks like I need to buy a dedicated graphic card.

Also, unraid boots from a usb drive and hosts images on top of that using KVM. Drives can be pooled or passed through to machines directly- which is your best bet for speed.

Did get this, sorry. I have a UnRaid USB and boot from it. And have 1 NVMe PCI and 1 SSD and 3 HDD into my Tower. So it's not possible to pass-through NVMe PCI directly to VM which I'll be using on the machine where USB with UnRaid inserted?

If we are talking about CAD here- you would be best buying a new graphics card that supports SRVIO and setting up a proper esxi server and passing a number of GPU cores to it.

So it's not possible to use CAD on the VM (on local PC) with GTX 1070 ti on it? I think it's possible, but right now I just gathering information before try)

  5. Thank you for the answers!!!! Very helped. I finish the configuration of PC. But I installed the Primary the Windows 10 PRO system.

    image.thumb.png.e4320eabc8859ccdad40bc146a746cd1.png

To work the system like I need am I'm right with that steps:

    1) Create a DiskImage of the current Win10 PRO.

    2) Install the UnRaid (with erasing all data from the SSD) I have just a 1 disc C:\ on the SSD drive.

    3) Choose the DiskImage from the 1 step and run the PC as a 1-st but main VM.

    ... and check all things

    4) After that setup a 2nd VM and passthough the Intel 630 HD, USB 3.0 to that VM.

    5) Profit.

Am I right with the step 1 and 2, and all another?

  6. Anybody have any answers to my questions? ) The UnRaid software have posibbilty to use only like a VirtualMachine? Or like a Widows Mulatipoint Server as well?

    But have a questions:

    1) If I'll be using my local PC with a GTX 1070 ti (I decide in at first), am I have possibility to PassThrough with UnRaid and run VM on the Intel 630 HD integrated graphics?

1.1) I have thought to run another VM, but connect to it via RPD from WiFi network. Will it be using same local GTX 1070 ti graphic card as a main GPU? (it's just for testing)

    2) If in the future I decide to buy another GTX 1070 ti and connect it to SLI-mode, and relocate this to VM machine via unRaid, will it be possible?

    3) What SSD is better? I decide to get SSDSC2BB800G701 (intel 800GB sata MLC) or may be M2 SSD will be better. Ad does both will be working with unRaid?

    4) I'll be using a i7 8700k with a DeepCool Gamer Storm MAELSTROM 240 DP-GS-H24RL-MS240. Will I have possibility to add more cores in the future to VM. And overlock with this type of watter cooler?

    5) I'm plan connect to my system up to 4 HDD drivers, and I want to buy an Intel Optaine 32 GB of memeory. And does the UnRaid software working on VM's with Intel Optaine Memory?

5.1) Is it possible to connect to VM exact HDD and only exact not all?

    6) Does the HOT Pluggining on USB will be working at VM's machine via UnRaid software?

    7) What kind of USB hubs will be working with UnRaid software?

  7. OK thx guys for the advices.

    I actually decide this:

Use main PC on Win 10, where Unraid will be installed as a main PC for AutoCad worker.

Create a VM just to frontdesk - which one mostly doing an internet surfing.

    But have a questions:

You have to specify which core is accessible by which VM. Sure, you can give 2 VMs the same cores but as soon as 1 VM will use lots of ressources the other will throttle or completly pause for a second. Forget about the idea of 3 VMs using 1 single GPU and all the same cores with enjoyable experience. There is a reason why people buying expensive workstations for 3D rendering tasks or video editing.

I just thought about it like running 2 Autocads and 1 Davici Resolve programms at the same time. But just need to separate in to 3 USERS. Will be it a wise idea to setup a UnRaid + 1VM settig up everyting think correctly to mai users.

And after that trying to connect another ones?

That's not how it works in Unraid at least not now with consumer and workstation GPUs. There are Server GPUs that supports SRIOV but i don't think Unraid is ready for this yet. Nvidia and Amd not selling such GPUs to the mainstream user atm. Might be changing in the future but don't expect it to be happen. As soon as it happens, expensive server parts will become obsolete if cheap mainstream gear can do the same thing. You might can use a Windows Terminal Server with the one specific Quadro card passed through and have multiple users connected via RDP to it and make use of it. Depends on the software. For some applications you need special licenses to work under TS. If you watch Linus video again you can clearly see, he passes through ONE card each per VM. Also noted in my experience Autocad benefits from lots of RAM especially in 3D mode. 32GB might be ok for 1 VM and same with the CPU. 6 cores 12 threads thats 2 cores 4 threads for each VM. Did you ever used Autocad or a video editing software on a dual core system? With your specs you can play around with it but forget about a perfect experience on these ressource heavy tasks.

I actually thought the Resources will be not fixed for a particular VM. And it'll be flexible, like if AutoCad requesting more power it'll get more and if Davinci resolve will request more power it'll use for CPU cores and more GPU power. Am I correct with this or not?

@MakarkinPRO If you need the power of the quadro in 3 vm's you need 3 quadros. You can't use one GPU in 3 desktop pc's at the same time, right? Same for VMs. As soon as 1 VM uses one secific GPU other VM's have no access to it.

And I heard about termin GPU Passthrough. Does it's not mean like using 1 GPU power for 3 VMs?

If you want to install 3 independent VM´s, you´ll need 3 independent GPU´s. That´s for your purpose.

Be sure to choose the right ones which support your programs.

And don´t forget to think about also 3 independent NIC´s.

I'll buy the cheapest GPU, but I need ability to use the MAIN power of Nvidia Quadro GPU.

And what is the NIC's mean... don't understand this terminalogy)

This is correct!   You cannot split up the ports on a single GPU among different VMs.

And if I'll buy the 2 the cheapest GPU just for monitor connection. I'll have posibility to use my main Nvidia Quaodro as a Passthrow? (and this card will be using already by one of VM.

  13. Hello everyone) After watchign Linus videos about installing several work places at one PC I want to do by myself)

I actually need for 2 Autocad (+3d Autocad workers) and for me for video edditig videos from the trips and from the Chromakey in Davinci Resolve (free version).

    image.thumb.png.426390f74991af0789d583d27f2ec481.png

I tried to visualize it. If somebody uderstand what I want to archive I'll be happy to receive any recommendations)

The software may be UnRaid, Microsoft Multipoint Server 2016.

    left - the server specs

right - 3 rooms of each worker

ps: I really want and hope on the BlackFriday it'll be discounts)

The plan is: install the unRaid software and after that install Windows 10 PRO on each of the machines and use them just by turning on the monitors at work places)
