What is a recommended card for a 7-disk build? I am leaning towards the Rocket 620, but wouldn't mind cheaper alternatives.
Picked up mine for $15 with shipping on EBay the other day...don't think you're going to find one much cheaper than that.

Thanks. x16 did the trick
-
Should having the card in the x1 vs the x16 slot matter?
-
However, preclear is only running at about 35MB/sec on the two drives that I'm clearing on the Rocket 620 card. Is this normal or do I need to change some setting to get them up to full speed?
-
So it appears the Rocket 620 (2X SATA PCI-E card) WORKS in the N36L. Was able to put the server up with 8 drives just fine.

Yes, 2x3.5" drives in the optical bay is fine--my green drives sit in the low 30C range when spun up and never break 40C even during parity checks/sync.
Very easy to slip a 2.5" drive under the optical bay, so I think 6x3tb (3.5") and a 2.5" for cache could be done easily. This is basically my setup except that I'm using 2TB drives because I'm poor
Remember that you'll need a PCI-E SATA adaptor to add a 7th port though (6th is provided via eSATA port on back).

The drive that came with it is pretty fast, I think.
I'm considering Dremeling out that part below the 5.25" bay to add another 3.5" drive, but I'll probably wait for the warranty period to end:
How'd you get all those power connectors up there? Just daisy chaining Y splitters?
And did you have to modify anything to get the 3.5" drive below the optical bay? Right now I have two 3.5" on top of it and a 2.5" stuffed in there, but it would be awesome to replace the 2.5" with another 3.5".

Hmmm. That's a good point. There are a few reports on the boards of people purchasing them to use in their unRAID, but I can't find any actual build reports with the 620s. I already ordered one though, so I guess we'll see.

awesome, went ahead and bought one of these:

anyone tried an SATA PCIe card in one of these? I'm guessing they need to be in some sort of micro form factor?
If anyone could point me to one that they know works with the server, that'd be awesome

This is what it looks like currently:

I'm running preclear on a new WD20EARS drive that I just received. I have the jumper placed on the 7-8 pins so the drive should be in compatibility mode.
The speed of the "Copying zeros to remainder of disk to clear it" is jumping around a ton--I've never seen this with a drive before. Usually my clears (on 1/2TB EADS drives) start off at around 90MB/sec and gradually slow down as the clearing progresses.
With the WD20EARS drive (the first of this kind that I've ever used)...the speed is jumping from around 250MB/sec (which seems TOO fast?) to around 3MB/sec.. Is this normal? Does this indicate something is wrong with the drive?
-
So it's only the WD20EARS, right? I have some WD20EADS drives as well...I'm assuming these are not affected?
-
Wow, wish I would have seen that WIKI post earlier. Going to take a long time to add jumpers to all of my drives one by one and rebuild data. Guess it's worth it though?
hmm
-
Just checking since you didn't mention it and these are EARS, did you jumper pins 7-8 prior to preclear?
If not, you'll probably need to preclear them again after putting the jumpers on and BEFORE adding them to your array
Thanks Graywolf,
Yes, already have the the jumpers in, so now the fun can start!
Wow, so I have a bunch of the WD20EARS drives and I've never jumper'd the 7-8 pins. Just noticed on the top of the drive it says "Windows XP, set jumpers 7-8 prior to installation or use WD Align SW". So is this really necessary for Unraid? I don't think the drives even came with jumpers.

Hmmmm. Hadn't even considered the power consumption from the card, hopefully my system is OK, no meter to monitor it with unfortunately. Maybe I'll buy one.
Mine has been running with 7 drives (6x Hitatchi Coolspin 2TB + 1x 80GB SSD Cache) without any heat/stuttering issues though.
