  1. Hi folks.  Another newbie here and a first time builder too.  I've got all components on the way for a mini-ITX NAS with a low power CPU (AMD C-60) and space for 6 hard drives (will be running 3 3TB WD Reds initially), so I figure I shouldn't need more than a 300W PSU even after I get up to 6 drives.  The problem is that every review I read of the case (Fractal Design Node 304) recommended a modular PSU for the build and I couldn't find one under 400W.  So I wound up going with the Corsair CX430 (it was a little smaller form factor than the 400W I was looking at and I figured that would help with cable management in such a small case).

Anyway, did I make a mistake?  If I should have gone with a lower power non-modular instead I could still return the Corsair.  Thanks.

For 6 drives I would have gone a bit higher like 500w but you should be fine. 6 drives would need about 220w (assuming 3amp draw avg)  on spin up alone so with even a low power CPU you'd be close to it Max. Aslo if its on 24/7 each year the capacity of the psu will drop so you want head room to account for that.

  2. I have just bought a IBM M1015 for my new unRAID server. As soon as I receive the card I am going to flash it the usual HBA FW - but!

If I one day want to use another OS than unRAID, say windows server 8 maybe, is there then anyway I can reverse the process and get back the original IBM RAID FW?

Yes. The same way. Almost all the instructions tell you how.

Though as far as RAID cards go, its not the fastest.

Ive found it just as fast or faster to leave in IT mode and have the OS do software raid.

  4. Do all 12-bay cases need this flattening-procedure? Or are there cases that can do without?

Basically yes. There are very few cases that don't have the tabs separating the 5.25" bays, and those are few and far between. At least in the US they are very difficult to obtain.

Should read, all in-expensive cases - as most Lan-Li cases have owned/used do not have the tabs (or if they do, its on every 3rd one, so works perfect with the cages).

  5. There just got to be a better way!!!

Maybe next time I'll try a a Usb cdrom drive with some sort of live cd.

Exactly what I was afraid of happened. Removed board to a windows system to flash. Flashed perfect. Installed,  congratulations you are the proud winner of a red ball! The cause a bad connection. Maybe I should have set the array not to auto start. I had problems with auto start a while back, too long ago to remember the version. Thought I remember reading about it may not be working or maybe not sticking at the moment.(Could be wrong hope I am. Does anyone know for sure?)

Any Ideas on how to power up and check to see if all the drives are readable  without creating any red balls. lf this off topic sorry, please fell free to move.

During boot the m1015 should list the drives or load its bios to check before unraid starta.

  6. Where I buy/check prices for items in Canada (or that ship to Canada and including duty/etc):

    • CanadaComputers.com
    • NewEgg.ca
    • NCIX.ca (but lately NewEgg beats them on price including shipping/etc and conversion rate with our dollar almost par)
    • Monoprice.com - for cables, cable parts, tools, audio/video, and some computer parts
    • RackmountChassisPlus.com - the name says for what - new find, so not sure how good yet.
    • Amazon.com/ca - .com need to make sure its from Amazon so that they will ship to Canada - usualy free shipping
    • Dell - i know, but sometimes have great deals with free shipping
    • Costco - if you have membership - can have great deals! particularly on network routers, APC UPS', and external storage (flash/usb drives)
    • Ebay - of course ;) - usual disclaimer when using, but the M1015 is easy to find there along with other sata expansion cards when you need them.

  7. A 5-in-3 takes up the same space as a 4-in-3 (the drives are just closer together).  It should fit.

Technically not true.  Most 4-in-3's have rail slots (so if your case has those support tabs in the 5.25 bays you don't have to bend them out of the way).

All 5-in-3's I believe do not have slots (so if your case has support tabs, you Must bend them/cut them whatever to get the cage into 3 bays)
