  1. I am looking at build my unraid server I have all co components but for the processor.

I will be mostly serving files and backing up files over 10 gb ethernet.

    Athlon 220GE, Amd 3200G, or a R5 2600 with a GT 710. Don't have any plans to run vms as I have a workstation with a R9 3900X.

So far for hardware I have a

    Asrock B450m Pro 4 motherboard

16 gb XPG Gammix D10 3000MHz got it cheap

    Psu

    Fractal Node 804

    10 gb ethernet card

2 6 terabyte hard drives 1 for parity.

My thoughts are a 220GE and upgrade later on if I need more power. Though will the 220GE limit the transfer speeds?

    Thanks

    WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBWLG0080HBK-NESN

For those of you who need storage now, Amazon has (shuckable) WD 8 TB external HDDs on sale for $125 (about $5 below the other times it goes on sale). Also, it's Amazon, so shipping is fast and free with Prime.

Analysis: At $15.625/TB, this puts the 8TB at about the same value as the 10TB which occasionally goes on sale for $160 on Amazon and Best Buy. I would say you're better off getting a 10 TB if you can wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday when we should see at least these prices, but if you need storage now, this is a good deal.

Unraid don't support Infiniband, they can probably be set to Ethernet model but might be best just to buy Ethernet models, those are plug and play, you can use direct attach copper cables for short lengths or use fiber for longer ones.

Thanks any suggestions on cards that are supported?

  5. I am looking at some Mellanox ConnectX-2 MHRH2A-XSR 10GB cards one for my unraid server and one for my desktop. These are supported by unraid out of the box? Also If I have 1 in my server 1 in my desktop can I connect them together for faster transfer speeds from my desktop to my server? Then use a 1 GB ethernet to our regular network for other PCs on our network to access the unraid server?

Also what cord will I need to connect the Mellanox ConnectX-2?

    Thanks

Hi all, I have a question. I've got a machine that I put together back in 2016 which used this now-discontinued 660W PSU, the Seasonic SS-660XP2. The PSU recently failed, and I'm wondering if I might have been running too much hardware on it.

When I first set this up, it was running 4 WD Reds (6GB) plus a NVidia GeForce GTX 970 (not used often, just for gaming in a VM). Everything worked fine. Then a while back my motherboard failed and I wound up uninstalling the GPU. Recently after a disk failure I decided to add in a 5th HDD and pop the GPU back in. I started it up and everything seemed to be working fine, but then after several days of happiness it just shut down, and refused to POST, and after a bit of troubleshooting I realized the PSU had failed.

I've RMAed the power supply, but I'm wondering if I might have been hovering just on the edge of how much power I needed, and if adding in the 5th HDD might have pushed it over the edge and caused the PSU to fail. So I thought I'd get some advice. Does 660W sound like a big enough power supply for that amount of hardware? Should I upgrade to a beefier model now and save whatever replacement Seasonic sends me for a different machine?

I have the same power supply, originally had a Ryzen 2700X, 1 GTX 1080, and one GTX 1070 (was mining) plus about 4 hard drives and now have upgraded to a RTX 2070, Ryzen 3900X and still no problems.

  7. I am thinking of building an unraid server with:

Asrock b450m pro 4 Amd 3200G Fujitsu lsi raid card flashed 8 gb ddr 4 ram 10 gb ethernet Fractal Node 804 500 gb sata ssd or nvme for cache

I am not sure what power supply yet thinking of the Antec 380 greenwatt or a corsair cx450 watt. I might have a vm or two for testing.

I will start with 2 6 terabytes of hard drive 1 for parity one for data.

Do I need to use Nas hard drives?

Is every hard drive I add seen as its own drive on the network?

Would a 500 gb sata drive or nvme be better? I plan on writing 200 + gigabytes every week as I do video editing. Do I need two in raid 1?

    Thanks
