UnRAID 15 Bay 22 Ports NAS Server Research & Specifications

Hello I wanted to share my UnRAID server that I recently purchased and am in the process of building currently.  I am waiting for the processor to show up so that I can continue the build process but I have written down all the specs to share with the group:

Looks like a nice build - very well thought out.

Just one suggestion - forgo one of the SASLP controllers (+ associated breakout cables).  With 1 SASLP + motherboard you have a pretty good match of 14 ports to use with 15 disk slots.  When it looks like you are needing that 15th slot (or even if you just had to have it now), you could go for a cheap $10 2 port PCIe x1 controller.  By the time you need more ports and are considering upgrading your case, there may be better controller options available.

BTW, always remember to plan in a spare slot for preclears and emergency situations where you need to add another disk to the array.  (This "spare" can be used for your cache disk, because you can pull the cache disk and put in a different disk without impacting the array.)  Using your last slot for an array disk can limit your diagnostic and recovery options.

You also should read about others using that case and the icy docks.  Sometimes the stock fans in cases and docks are noisy, and you might want to go ahead and replace them rather than having to pull the server apart soon after the build.

Good luck getting that thing assembled.  Make sure to take pictures as you build and plan to post in the UCD forum.  Looks like you are someone that does their homework, so you've probably already found the "read this first" sticky in the general forum that directs you to much of the knowledge base available on unRAID.

Welcome aboard!

Yeah i noticed after I got all the equipment and found that I didn't need the extra 8 port card.  I was originally thinking I was not going to put the parity and cache drives in the hot swap bays and was  going to put it somewhere inside the case.  But now looking at how full the case is I don't think that is going to happen.  So I agree with you that I should just forgo the card and return it.  I can't return the 2 8087 cables because I purchased them on eBay though.  Maybe I should see if anyone wants to purchase the card  with the cables here for a small savings.  I think I paid about 140 or so for it with the cards.

Also thanks for the advice.  I look forward to messing around with the server and I don't plan on moving my 1.5 tb array straight away just a copy first then play with it and break it a few times then move it.

Finally I have a build post in draft I will be sure to post them both to UDC when I am all done.

I just got my server up and running.  I will be putting the build process on my blog soon.  So far everything is running very well.
