Red dot in new hard drive (less then a week). what does it mean ?

Featured Replies

Hi ,

I have 4 new hard drives in my nas box , 3x2TB and 1x500GB for cache.

Today after i did poweroff from terminal I've seen that one of the 2TB drives (mnt/disk2) has red circle.

What could be the problem here ?

Attached 2 images of main and unmenu and syslog.

thx.

It indicates a "write" to the drive failed and it was taken off-line.  (disabled)

There can be many causes, anything from the drive itself failing to a cable failing, to a loose connector.

See here for a starting point:

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ#What_does_the_Red_Ball_mean.3F

Do not be fooled by the ability to read and write the failed drive.  It is being simulated by reading all the other remaining disks in the array.

First steps would be to stop the array, power down, and re-seat the connectors to the drive.

Then, power back up, and see if you can get SMART Status reports from the drive. (you can use the unMENU disk-management screen to make that easy)

If the disk responds with a smart report, odds are it was only a loose connector.

You'll then need to stop the array

un-assign the failed drive

start the array with it un-assigned  (this will cause the array to forget its model/serial number)

stop the array once more

re-assign the drive

start the array and allow it to re-construct the contents onto the failed drive.  This will typically take 8 to 10 hours for a 2TB disk. (about the same time it took for the initial parity calc)

Once the disk is re-constructed, click on the "Check" button to ensure you can read what was just written.  If that parity-check is successful, you are back running.

If by chance the disk had actually failed, you can stop the array, install a replacement disk instead of the old, and then just start the array. It will re-construct the old contents onto the replacement drive.

Ok ,

I've replaced that sata cable and letting it work the rebuild now.

Build finished , Now all lights are blinking green.

What does it mean ?

I've tried to stop the array so I could restart it.

All drives unmounted except cache (which is empty) and is stuck on "unmounting"... therefor I dont have an option to reboot from \\tower

blinking indicates the deive is spun down

Stuck unmounting means the cache drive is busy. you will need to kill the process keeping it busy for the array to stop.
