2.5" drives with unRAID?

Featured Replies

Is anyone using 2.5" hard drives with unRAID?  I have a bunch of these laying around, both IDE and SATA and am wondering if these can be mixed in with my existing 3.5" drives?

If anyone is doing this, can you also comment on overall performance vs a 3.5"-only setup?

I had a spare 2.5" SATA drive out off a laptop and instead of converting it into an external drive I threw it into the tower. Since it had the same connectors as a 3.5" it was easy to plug in and the motherboard recognized it. UNRAID accepted it and it's now one of the drives in the array. The speed, well it's slower, it's a 5400rpm drive, but it is fast enough to stream DVDs off of so it has passed my minimum requirements. UNRAID is able to report the temp and spin down the drive.

Current config: (8) 3.5" IDE drives 80 to 500 GB, (1) 3.5" SATA 400 GB, (1) 2.5" SATA 80 GB.
