[SOLVED]Replacing Parity with an EARS drive. Last question.

Featured Replies

Okay I got my drives arranged properly.

Booted the array without parity to ensure it was all correct. It was.

Then hooked the parity drive up and booted the array again.

It said

"Stopped. Upgrading parity."

Then realized I had not updated to a version that supported EARS drives properly.

So I upgraded and rebooted and it still says

"Stopped. Upgrading parity."

Is there something I gotta do to clear and format that EARS drive properly or just let it roll on?

If it has a partition, you need to zero it.

Once it does not, you need to set the MBR-4k-aligned option in the settings page so it will be 4k-aligned.

You can use

preclear_disk.sh -z /dev/sdX

to zero the MBR

or

dd if=/dev/zero count=1 of=/dev/sdX

will also do it.

Make sure you use the correct device... otherwise you'll wipe out an existing MBR and make the data inaccessible until you repair it.

If was brand new out of the box so does it need that?

Also how do I tell what drive it is for the command?

If you click on the "parity" link on the main page it will tell you if it is 4k aligned or unaligned. An EARS with a jumper should be unaligned and a EARS without a jumper should be 4k-aligned.

You go to the devices page and the drive identifier will be listed as part of the drive selected, such as (sda), (sdc), etc.

When you upgrade a disk you always have to click the "are you sure" box and then hit the start button before anything actually happens.

It just says Partition Format: unknown

Perfect, there is no partition. Just set the 4k-aligned on the options page for an unjumpered EARS drive and start the array.

What options page?

I see in the settings

Default partition format:

But wont changing that cause issues with my normal drives?

EDIT:

never mind I figured out what you meant.

GOOD TO GO!
