some quirks: mounting ntfs drive to transfer files + other question

Featured Replies

I recently purchased unraid pro, previously i was running windows 2003 server standard. I have 9 drives (of which 4 were pretty new/empty) which were all ntfs.  I created an array w/ the 4 empty drives, and did not assign the drives w/ data to the array since I wanted to copy the data over.  Since its a new array, i haven't assigned a parity drive yet b/c i tried copying the files over w/ a parity drive and it was going really slow.

So after copying the files over to the unraid disk, i notice in network explorer that all the folders/files have the read-only attribute set and that i cannot delete the folder called "RECYCLER" on the unraid disk even tho i've un-checked the read-only attribute thru windows...it pops up a dialog box saying "You do not have permission to perform this action" and the file it refers to is "desktop.ini", but that file isn't even in the Recyler folder.  I don't have any user security/shares going on so all users should have full read/write access.

any idea why its copying all the files from the ntfs drive as read only and why i can't delete the "RECYCLER" folder that it copied from the ntfs drive?

also, if I don't enable user security, any user can just browse the network and read/write files right? where exactly do you put read/write permissions per user? what config file?

also, i think i've found a bug:

I do not have parity drive.  I enabled user shares under Shares link (by stopping the array). Went to shares link again, it said i need to start the array for user shares...so I start the array. I now go back to Shares link and all i get is a white/blank page and can no longer access any of the web configuration pages.  Telnet still works and all the drives still show up in the network explorer. I have to reboot using telnet for web interface to work again...but now every time i click on the Shares link, same thing happens, white screen and can no longer access web interface.

how can i fix this, i can no longer access the Shares page on the web interface.

edit: ah, i have to stop the array and then access the Shares link.  If array was running and i accessed share link, it would show a blank page and web config would no longer work.

edit 2: well, parity any everything is up and running now, but i still CANNOT access the shares page, i get a blank white page, and web config no longer works, i have to reboot to get it working agian...whats the issue here?

thanks

Hmm... I only discovered your edited post by accident.  It seems that editing a post does not trigger it to appear in the 'Unread Post' list, so many of us missed it, especially if we had no ideas the first time we saw it.  My post, though not very helpful, may pop it back up before others who may be more knowledgeable about shares and permissions.

Somewhere, there is a post from Tom instructing a user how to manually reset the user shares system, something like deleting a couple of share-related files.  If you can find that post, that seems like the best step, to reset the share system.

i haven't had any luck searching for it in the forum :(

can someone help me out to get the shares working?

thanks

hum wonder how i missed those posts....one of my drives has 19 top level folders, so i guess thats the problem, thanks for the links

so, i created a new folder called "HD-DVDs" and tried to copy the top level folders into that folder, but i keep getting "You do not have permission....". I can move the individual files inside the top level folders, but it doesn't let me move the folder w/ all its contents....which i find weird :(

I keep hoping someone with more experience with user shares will speak up, because I have never used them myself.  One idea comes to mind, turn off User Shares first before moving the top-level folder into a subfolder, since the system may have them locked/associated with a User Share.

i don't have user shares turned on :/ nor any of the user security features...i'll try to go home and reboot the unraid server and see if it helps any

well i cut down my top level folders to 7 max, still same thing happening :/, rebooted and all...shares still not working

also i still cannot move a top level folder and its files to another in the top level...to test something i just created a new folder in top level and tried to movie it, and it worked...i just can move the folders are already there, says I do no have permission :/

edit: well i looked into the folder permissions that were set for all the files and folders which i was having trouble moving...i had to telnet and chmod 755 all the directories...as none of them had attributes to write, even tho owner was root.

edit2: ok fixed it all, took top level folders down to 3 max and shares started working, now works like a charm :D

only wish there were security options for each automatic disk share (disk1...disk16) like there are for the user created shares
