Yikes....disk disabled

Featured Replies

Hello,

I put in a new disk 2 days ago, cleared it, and copied approx 1TB of data to it.  This afternoon I get a dreaded red X (disabled) status.  I believe the disk has bellied up on me.  As I look through the log, looks like it never mounted correctly.  Here is a small sample of the attached syslog of the disk:

Mar 30 18:16:58 Tower kernel: md: disk16 read error

Mar 30 18:16:58 Tower kernel: handle_stripe read error: 820528600/16, count: 1

Mar 30 18:16:58 Tower kernel: ata9: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/04 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ 0xb/00/00

Mar 30 18:16:58 Tower kernel: ata9: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }

Mar 30 18:16:58 Tower kernel: ata9: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }

Mar 30 18:16:58 Tower kernel: md: disk16 read error

Is the anything to do except replace it?  All info appreciated.

Thankx

Richard

disk16.txt

Step 1.   Stop the array

Step 2.   Power down

Step 3.   Check the cables to the drive are seated properly.  If one were to get loose, the symptoms would be exactly like yours.

Step 4.   Power up, see if the drive will respond to a SMART report request.

smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sdX

(where sdX = your specific device)

I think it will be /dev/sdj

I appreciate the suggestion Joe.  The cable seemed to be OK, and I reseated the disk in the slot.  Attached is the SMART report....

The smart report looks ok.

you can get the disk back in service by

Stopping the array

Un-assigning the disk

Starting the array with it un-assigned  (This will cause the array to forget the model/serial number of the drive)

Stop the array once more

Re-assign the disk.  (It will  be accepted as its own replacement)

Start the array.  The contents of the failed disk will be re-constructed onto itself.
