Question on non-AF drives and partition format

Featured Replies

After a huge headache getting a replacement drive for a failed WD-EARS, I just want to make sure I understand correctly so I dont mess anything else up!  :P

I am currently running unRAID 4.7, and have the "Default partition format" set to "MBR: 4k-aligned". I am replacing my parity drive(the WD-EARS) with a WD-FASS, which as far as I can tell, is NOT an AF drive. Will the default partition format cause any issues with adding a new, non-AF drive? And if/when I preclear it, should I still use the -A flag? Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry for the probably silly/paranoid question.

A non-AF drive wiill perform the same whether its partition begins at sector 63 or 64.  So the forums recommendation is just partition everything to 4k-aligned.

The ONLY drives that have problems with the sector 4K alignment is a EARS drives that have the jumper installed.  Such a drive need to have the sector 63 (unaligned) partition to give best performance.  If you don't have one of those than you have nothing to worry about by always using the 4k-aligned sectors.

Great, thanks for the help! Of course, now I find out this issue: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=13560.msg128495#msg128495, which I believe may have been the ACTUAL source of my problems  >:(. Ah well, at least I'm getting a slightly better drive for my trouble, but hopefully a solution will be found before the new drive finishes preclearing.
