System won't boot into unraid

Featured Replies

I have looked through a number of other threads and can't find a solution to my issue.

I can't currently boot to unraid on my USB stick (purchased from unraid).  I have been using it for a year with no issues and now it just stopped.

How can I check the USB stick? (is there anyway to see if it is working properly from my pc? it looks fine when I plug it into my pc, it shows up in the bios of my unraid box but it doesn't recognise the operating system when I boot up.)

If I download the operating system again to the USB stick and try booting off that will I lose the information on my unraid tower?

oh and I am using 4.5.4 which is what I have been on for the last year.

Many thanks

Did you check your BIOS to ensure you are configured to boot off of the USB. Sometimes adding new disks shuffles the order, but I've seen the order get shuffled randomly on some systems. If that is okay you will need to descibe in detail what happens when you try to boot.

Yeah I have checked and it is setup to boot off the USB.  It even states that the brand so I know it recognises it.

It then gets stuck at the point where it is looking for a valid operating system to boot from.  It says the same thing whether I have the usb stick in or not.

"No Valid Device. Press any key to continue. Reboot and SElect Proper DEvice or Insert Boot Media in selected boot drive and press any key"

Based on symptoms, still seems like it could be a BIOS boot setting.

But if not, you should plug the USB into your PC and run chkdsk on it to see if there is any corruption of the USB, and if here is, let it repair.

If USB is clean, you could try preparing a new flash USB and try to boot off of that.  If successful, the problem is looking like the original USB itself.

Not only do you have to be able to boot from the USB drive, and enable that in the BIOS, you must ALSO select it as the boot device. (On my server, it shows up in the list of DISKS)

If you add or delete disks, many BIOS help you (yeah right) by making the new disk the boot device.  (even though it is not a bootable disk)
