July 7, 201115 yr This setup is taken straight from Raj's 4 Drive MicroServer in the Prototype Designs thread. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7998 Mobo: ZOTAC GF6100-E-E http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813500045 CPU: AMD Sempron 140 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103698 RAM: Kingston 2GB DDR2 800 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134636 PSU: CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 430W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026 Case: Rosewill R101-P-BK http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147112 Hot Swap Drive Bays: Mobile Rack for 3.5 inches SATA HDD - Open Frame http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10824&cs_id=1082402&p_id=3857&seq=1&format=2 SNT SNT-SAC2131B 3x3.5" Hard drive in 2x5.25" Bay Hot Swap SAS/SATA Backplane RAID cage http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817993019 (am i correct in assuming i'd either buy 3 mobile racks or one RAID cage? are there any advantages to one over the other?) Hard Drives: 2 WD Green 2TB Drives (one for Parity). 2-4TB of storage is more than enough for me for the foreseeable future. I don't really plan on expanding the storage amount for at least 3-4 years. I'd like to set up this server to run sabnzbd, sickbeard, couchpotato, and air video. Are the hardware specs up to snuff to accomplish all of that, mainly the processor? One other question... I'd like to store this server by my router, and the most amicable way to fit the cases there would be to lay the case on its side. There would still be ample room for airflow, but I'm more concerned with and wear that the drives would incur, and if they'd be more prone to fail. Are there any disaster stories from laying the case on its side & leaving the server on 24/7? I greatly appreciate any advice, help, & guidance!
July 7, 201115 yr To get four external hot swap drives, you would need to purchase one mobile rack and one 3-in-2 drive cage for a total of 4 drives. Three mobile racks will give you only three drives externally, but then you could install more internally if you don't mind opening up the case to perform drive maintenance. For air video you'll definitely want a faster processor. Pretty much any dual core should do, so I would shop around for the CPU offering the best value (bang for your buck) of the various cheap dual cores available. 4 GBs of RAM might help as well, though I would start with just 2 GB and add another 2 GB only if needed. There's absolutely nothing wrong with running your server on its side. Hard drives are designed to be run either flat (0 degrees) or vertically (90 degrees). Running them at any other angle, such as 45 degrees, will cause them to die an early death, but 0 and 90 degrees are perfectly fine. Airflow should be fine as well. If placed on the ground your server may accumulate dust more quickly, so you might have to clean it a bit more often (every 6 months or so should be sufficient). Everything else looks good. I'm glad you found my designs useful.
July 7, 201115 yr Author Great stuff. I'll find a beefier processor and see how 2GB of ram works out. Much appreciated!
July 7, 201115 yr I would highly recommend an Athon II X2 245 or 250 as the minimum for what you are doing. Without Air Video the Sempron would be fine. Also, I'd try to just grab 4gig of memory if I were you. If you just want 2 drives for now then buy the 3 drives into 2 slots cage and you will have room for one more drive in the future. Then, you can open the box and add-in the mobile rack if or when you want a 4th drive. Peter
