July 18, 201114 yr Last week I was trying to explain parity to a colleague considering setting up an unRAID server. (With only partial success - he had that 'nodding in agreement while looking a bit mystified' expression.) And I'd also seen some parity-related posts by Tom that helped clarify some aspects in my mind. So, prompted by these two things, I've drafted an overview or key concepts article... Parity It's an amalgam/distillation of existing wiki/forum text. And it could do with a good read and update from expert unRAIDers as there are probably other aspects that I don't know about, parts that could be expanded on, or additional links that could be added. Tom has already had a look over and corrected a bit on parity sync errors Feedback from new users would also be useful, to see whether there are parts that could be explained more clearly

Thanks so much for adding this to the wiki. Some of the content seems vaguely familiar - I wonder where it came from. The first paragraph starts out a bit on the techy side to me. As one who has tried to write up parity explanations, I can say it is tough to do without an example. And I think you quickly lose the reader if you try. Just my $0.02. Here is another post I wrote on parity that may or may not help you ... http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=11771.msg112352#msg112352
July 18, 201114 yr One small point, unRAID is rather confused about the meaning of a "block", it shows the user the location of parity errors in "512 byte" blocks but shows the sizes of drives in "1K byte" blocks. I don't think the user ever hears about 4k byte blocks. See http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=12371.msg117750#msg117750 Regards, Stephen
