February 14, 200818 yr Hi, I have been reading this forum for a while and decided to jump in to set up a RAID server. Based on the reading here, I decided to purchase P5B-VM DO with Celeron D 440. Tonight, I have assembled the system, but can not get the system to boot from the USB drive. Because this is the first time for a brand new system to boot, I am not sure if any one of the component is bad. I then went ahead to install Window XP and finish the whole process. Now the system is up and running with Windows XP. This at least proves to me that I have a working system. Now here comes the problem: I can not enter the BIOS setup screen. Whenever I reboot the system, after hit "DEL" key, it comes up with another ASUS screen to ask if I want to run setup by entering "DEL". I then hit "DEL" again and there is a screen pop up with "Enter CURRENT Password:". This is a brand new system, so I do not know any password. All the password I tried failed. I then just hit "enter" key, the system starts booting up with Windows XP. I can not go anywhere. I guess I must enter the BIOS setup to make the system boot from USB, but now I can not get into the BIOS at all. Please let me know if you have any idea. Thanks in advance, --Tom
February 14, 200818 yr When you get the "Enter Password" prompt, try entering a space (as in the spacebar, not the word space) and see if it will accept that as a password.
February 14, 200818 yr Just clear the CMOS. RTM. BTW, you shouldn't have a password set from the factory, sounds like you have a return or refurb. Bill
February 14, 200818 yr ... BTW, you shouldn't have a password set from the factory, sounds like you have a return or refurb. ... For what it's worth - the P5B-VM DO I got last week from lagoom.com (appeared to be NIB) had the same issue. Go figure....
February 14, 200818 yr Author JRS, I had just received my MB from lagoom.com on Tuesday, so it is not just me with the problem. What do you mean "NIB"? How did you fix the problem? Clear the CMOS list Bill indicates? --Tom

Clear the CMOS list Bill indicates? --Tom "NIB" --> "New In Box" -- in every way, it appeared to be a brand new motherboard.... except now that I think about it, the anti-static bag the motherboard was in was not sealed, although all the accessories were. Maybe it wasn't new. I received mine last Wed. I had some real problems getting the motherboard to work right (not including the bios password). When I finally got it to post, and ran into the bios password problem for about the 3rd time, I used a "space" for the password (per my first post above) and that let me into the bios. Try Bill's suggestion first. Clearing the CMOS is not a bad idea on any motherboard that is not behaving as expected. I had other problems with the board, the primary one was that it would immediately start as soon as the power supply on/off button was turned on (before I hit the normal case on/off button.) It did this with four psu's and two different cpu's. So I sent it back and am now going to try unRaid with an Intel board that should arrive tomorrow.
February 14, 200818 yr Author JRS, Thanks for clearing up my question. I just got home and reset the CMOS. It does work and allow me to enter the setup screen, so I will be working on BIOS setting according to the posts here in the forum. I might need to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version. If everything is OK, I will start working with unRAID installation tonight. --Tom

February 15, 200818 yr Except the one time (and only one time) I could get into the bios, it was not configured to start from a power off state. I wish that was the only problem I had with the board. The show-stopper problem was that it would not reliably post.
February 15, 200818 yr Author HI, Thanks for all of you have helped me in the past hours. I have upgraded the BIOS to 0903 and configured the setting according to the posts here in the forum, and my unRAID is up and running. Now I am scratching my head to try to figure out how to do the user share ........ --Tom
