February 23, 200818 yr Hey All, So I got my parity thing all fixed up. Thanks, Tom. Now here is the problem I have. In XP My Network Places, I see the tower and normally I see 9 disks and the flash under the tower. What happened the last time before drive 6 failed or this is what I presume. XP took disk 6 out of the list of drives under tower and put it under Unknown still in a folder called tower\disk6 but when I open the folder I see a desktop.ini file and a shortcut called Target to \\tower\disk6. This seemed to happen just before disk6 failed. Now that I have fixed the server installed a new disk and upgraded the parity drive. I was in My Network Places this morning and now I notice that XP has done the same thing as above to DISK 7. If I look at the address it is docu..& set\person\nethood\shortcut when I switch to workgroup view I see all my computer in the workgroup and if I click on Tower then all 9 disks are there with no shortcuts. I am confused and I really do not want to loose another disk. Any Ideas? This happened this morning that I noticed anyhow, I was copying a folder.jpg file to a folder on another disk and windows came up and said network connection no longer available and then froze up Network Neighbourhood for some reason. I shut down and rebooted windows and now I have what I explained above. Regards, DVS
February 23, 200818 yr Author Update, I noticed that in My network places that Tower is being report as an internet connected computer and not as a local network connected computer. On other machines in the house It is reported as a local network connected computer. Regards, DVS
February 23, 200818 yr Author Well, I broke down. Too many flaky issues, I tore the server apart today and took out the Antec trio 650. Installed a Silencer 610 and replaced my surge protect with an APC 550VA, It's not that big but all that I have plugged into the battery side is the server. I returned the 3 Samsung 750GB drive and bought WD's instead. Rebuilt the server rerouted the cables for better cooling flow and mounted a new fan in the side panel. I installed one of the 750WD it saw the temp right away off the SATA300 TX4 and it is rebuilding data now. We will see in 12 hours or so how it's going. A couple more things. The new APC has a data port RJ45 to USB to monitor the battery back-up Is there any way to hook that up to the server and telnet in.. Sorry if this has been covered already or can I hook the APC to my router and monitor through the network I still cannot figure out what's up with my network places. the server is still seen as an internet computer and not as local network PC. OH Well! I guess I'll be up late trying to figure that out as well. Thanks, DVS
February 23, 200818 yr Author I am starting my own thread. LOL. anyhow both issues fixed. First Issues with the shortcut to disk 7 why My network places is reporting wrong is a bug with IE7. Time to go back to Firefox I guess. I just deleted the shortcut from Network places and used the wizard to add a new share and it put disk seven back in the list. The other problem of the shares being seen as "The Internet" instead of "Local Network" It seems if you browse your network from IE7, My computer etc Explorer automatically changes these share to "The Internet" for some reason. To fix I opened a system folder View/advanced and unchecked scan for network item automatically. The via the web I found this start | control panel | Internet Options | security | Local Intranet | sites | advanced | Then add the name of the computer or file share that you want windows to see as Intranet or Local Network Computer and click add in my case I put in /Tower and /Tower2. So it seemed that when I used IE7 to manage Unraid it forces it to use "The Internet" I guess this is not a problem really but just annoying know it is not right. Now it's fixed anyway. IE6 does not cause the same problem as I understand from reading. For someone who is not so familiar with a PC may get a little alarmed seeing "THE INTERNET" beside all there shared files.
