Plex Media Server on 4.7?

Featured Replies

I have seen the unraid install on the plex media server website.  Anyone using it?  What version of unraid is required (4.7 work?).  What is a recommended hardware to run it?  I am guessing my sempron 145 with 2gb ram, needs an ungrade to handle transcoding.

You need 5.0 because it requires the version of slackware that unraid is based off of (13) and won't work on the version 4.7 is based on (12). I have it up an running on my server running beta 12a and it works great. That is enough RAM (I'm using the same amount) but as far as the processor it will work fine for the plex media server, but if you want to do transcoding so you can watch stuff on your iPhone/iPad/AppleTV it might not cut it. I have a 2.4GHz Pentium Dual Core and that works fine. You'd really have to try it to see if it works ok.

Plex won't work on 4.7 since it requires Avahi (part of AFP which is standard in 5.0+)

That is not true. Avahi can be installed on 4.7. The reason it won't work is the reason stated in my post.

And FYI Avahi has nothing to do with AFP. Avahi is a open source Linux implementation of Bonjour, the service discovery software made by Apple for OS X and Windows. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonjour_(software)
