Boot Fails at Unpacking initranfs...

Featured Replies

Hi all, my 1st post here, and I'm sorry to say I'm asking for help.

I have tried to set up an old pentium 3 box as an unraid server, but the boot fails at the "Unpacking initranfs..." message - it just sits there forever, presumably frozen.

Is there anything I can do about this, any hints as to what could be causing it, or suggestions on what to check?

I ran a memtest with no problems detected.

I tried a 2nd thumb drive.

I tried 4.5.4 as well as the latest 5.0 beta 13.

Any ideas?

TIA.

Perform a memory test.  That would be the first suspect.

Second, try a different, smaller flash drive.  Older bios did not know how to address flash drives over 1Gig.

Update the BIOS, it might have fixes.

I gave up in the end and swapped the motherboard & cpu & memory.

The new one works fine.
