mbryanr Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Not my unRAID, but a Synology box...why would ethtool eth0 report the following? I've tried 2 different gigE switches, new cables, connecting directly to the router gigE ports, but my transfers max out at 100Mbps speeds. Settings for eth0: Supported ports: [ ] Supported link modes: Supports auto-negotiation: No Advertised link modes: Not reported Advertised auto-negotiation: No Speed: 1000Mb/s Duplex: Full Port: MII PHYAD: 8 Transceiver: internal Auto-negotiation: off Supports Wake-on: d Wake-on: d Link detected: yes Thanks for the help. This is really aggravating. Glad unRAID doesn't do this to me.
Rajahal Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 A question for Synology tech support maybe? I have no idea.
mbryanr Posted December 3, 2011 Author Posted December 3, 2011 I asked Syno at the same time I posted here..but got exactly what I should have expected from Level 1 support --not much. Although the ethtool eth0 command looks strange, it is connected @1000Mbps... Anyways... from further testing (and swapping cables, switches, etc), I can get transfers up to 25MB/s from the Syno to the unRAID (mounted via SMB), which is what I'd expect. Transfers to the Syno are ~10-12MB/s - which is strange, but I believe I may have found the reason. I had a drive failure previously, and replaced a single HD154UI with the newer HD155UI...yup 512kb and 4K in a Raid1 configuration. So I asked Synology what the impact of the combination would be? Their response: Thanks for writing us. We seriously recommend you not do that. There will be considerable impact on the drive performance in RAID config. Fortunately, I have the RMA HD154UI still available and will rebuild the Syno array. Must say, another reason I like unRAID - just throw any drive in and forget about it! So far in 1 year, I've had 1 drive failure, and virtually no other issues. Running without reboot for 3 months now. I'll update when I get the drive swapped. Edit: I got a little lazy since I've started running unRAID, and didn't consider the consequences of mismatching drives.
