SOLVED Losing Connection

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has already been asked but I could't find it.

My unRAID server seems to just lose connection. I start it up, run the parity check, every things fine, disks spin down after an hour and its all good, come back to it a day later or so and it just says safari cannot connect to server. plug in a monitor to the unRAID and its black - nothing.

And its not a one time thing, this is about the 4th time its done it, once during a file transfer, but usually just some time in the night.

Any reason for this? Explanations in very simple terms please, as if you were explaining it to a moron.

Thanks.

the server is crashing, typically because something in it is NOT working properly.

It could be the memory, the motherboard, or the power supply. (or nearly anything else).  It could even be a BIOS setting with the wrong voltage, timing, or clock speed for your specific memory.

First step... check the BIOS settings for memory voltage, timing, and clock speed.

Second step, run a memory test, preferably overnight.

I agree with Joe of course ;)

But would add one thing.  If your motherboard is relatively new, I would tell it to "reset to defaults".

Then check your settings - i.e. put SATA back into AHCI mode, etc.

Then run the memory check for 12-24hrs.

Well I ran a Mem Test and that was fine, but the PSU seems to be making a really high pitched electrical noise when it's plugged in, not sure if that's normal or if it did it before, but that's the only new thing in the system so it should be fine. It's Corsair builder series 600W PSU.

turns out for anyone else that might be having this problem, that all it was was the CPU fan wasn't completely clipped down and the processor was simply overheating and turning off.
