[SOLVED] have some questions

Featured Replies

sorry for all the questions but there is so much information and i could not find all my answers. for every answer i found i got more questions.

if i stream content over the internet does can i set it to be received through a media streaming device?

why would i want a virtual machine, i really don't get how u guys are using it. and what is ESXi?

how do i get those cool locks to lock the hardrives?

i read i can encrypt the hardrives with trucrypt does this effect performance?

can multiple people access a moive? say im watching x from the living room and my friend also want to watch x from his house on his laptop and than someone else also wants to watch x, all at the same time. is this possible?

Yes, although if too many people you may start to get stutters.

if i rip a movie onto my laptop and transfer it over the internet to my server does it write to the cache drive or go to the data drives?

Depends on what you set it to do, it can do both, when you copy to the server's destination folder, you get to set whether the folder uses the cache drive or not.

if for some reason the server loses power will the info on the cache drive be lost?

If it has finished writing to the cache then no. The chache drive has no redundancy, if it fails everything on it goes.

what is video transcoding, im not sure if i need a beast or a budget. i want to be able to auto torrent shows through and RSS feed and stream media and music around the house and over the internet to wherever, there is probably other stuff im going to be wanting to do later but i dont think i have discovered the full capabilities of unraid.

Transcoding is downgrading the video stream or changing the format to something the device will play.

can i mount all my iso's and play them like a dvds over a stream?

You can mount the dvd's on the local machine, I don't think you can on the server and then stream that.

if im streaming content over a lan im guessing ill need a media streaming device like Roku 2. does the device organize the music and movies or does it just show how u have it setup on the server?

btw if u know of a better device than roku i dont really like the interface for it.

Searh the forums for how people are playing the material on the server, XBMC, popcorn hours etc.

does unraid support MythTV?

no

can i make it so certain people only can see and access certain folders or certain content within folders?

Yes in the pro version, maybe the others I can't quite remember.

why would i want a virtual machine, i really don't get how u guys are using it. and what is ESXi?

Primarily it allows you to use the one machine and run multiple OSes on it, ie unRAID, a windows server etc.

If you can set it up you can save yourself a few servers.

OK someone can have a go from here.

thanks for answering so many of my questions

ok round 2

since unraid is booted of a flash drive and SSD drives have finite writes, does the flash drive ever get written on after its installed ot the flash drive, i ask because i don't want it breaking on me while im overseas.

Not really unless you install stuff on the flash drive.

how much power would a 24 drive Norco use average?

if i use a psu that has more watts than i need does it waste power or does it use just what it needs?

Not sure about the power usage.

My understanding of PSUs is that they will tend to draw the power that they need, the only thing is if you get like a 100000W PSU it isn't most efficient towards the lower end of it's power draw. Most PUS manufacturers have a graph that will show you where the ideal power draw is.

and 4tb drives are only supported by beta right? so i could only use 2tb atm?

If you want to use the 4.7 stable then ues 2TB, you can use larger drives but you have to limit them to 2.2TB. Not sure how to do that but search is your friend.

how can i go about updating without physically being near the machine is there a workaround? such as having 2 flash drives plugged in and bios set to boot from them in order and putting update on flash drive 2 than adding a script or something in flash drive 1 to stop it from booting so it boots flash drive 2. than formatting flash 1 and repeat on next update.

*edit - i assumed that you downloaded the software and loaded it on the flash drive but i read something that sounded like when u bought the software u were sent a flash drive. is this so?

What do you call a blind dear? - No Idea

Not sure what you mean there.

The dual flash idea could work if you could access the bios remotely. Changing the boot order would have to be part of that process.

Generally updating is a matter of replacing a couple of files on the flash drive and rebooting. I normally backup the flash, replace bzroot and bzimage and reboot. In prep of the upgrade a snapshot of the drive order should be done. Sometimes the order is lost and needs to be re-created after a upgrade.  These are general instructions. The readme included with the update will have a detailed upgrade path.

I've probably done more upgrades than most on this forum.  I've unplugged the flash drive on my older server only once because I had to...  (unRAID changed its license scheme, and offered a free pair of licenses to all current license holders.  That prompted me to buy a new pair of 1Gig flash drives.  I had to unplug the old 256Meg drive and install the new 1Gig drive.)  I've never unplugged the flash drive on my newer server where I test the 5.0beta series.

All the other times, and there have been many many releases, I've done it all remotely by just re-naming the existing bzroot and bzimage files to bzroot.nnn and bzimage.nnn and then copying in the new bzroot and bzimage files from windows using the //tower/flash share, then stopping the array and rebooting.    (I re-name the existing bzroot and bzimage so I can simply put them back as their original names if I need to un-do the upgrade.  I do not remember having to do that ever... but I do it just in case.)
