February 2, 201214 yr I need some help with a problem I currently have. I have an unlicensed version of unRAID (basic) which, as I understand it will support TWO data disks and a parity disk i have two 2TB drives in at the moment plus the 250Gig drive that came with my HP micro server. i didnt really want to use the 250Gig drive in the unRAID array at all but I ran out of space and brought it online. Now I've bought another 2TB drive which is being pre cleared as we speak but it just occurred to me that it isnt going to work. Of course I appreciate the easiest thing to do is buy a licence but that just isnt in the budget this month as a few unexpected surprises have swallowed up any spare cash i have. So i'm wondering how I can move the files from the 250Gig drive onto the new 2TB drive and then bring that into the array in place of the 250Gig drive? Anybody got any ideas??? thanks
February 2, 201214 yr Yes, just do a parity check and ensure all is OK with your present config. Then, assign the 2T to the disk2 slot in unRAID. There will be a message about rebuilding the 250 onto the 2T and expanding the array. Check any required boxes and press start. unRAID will rebuild the data onto the new disk. Search the Wiki for replacing a failed disk if you want more info since the steps are the same. Peter
February 2, 201214 yr Author oh you've made it seem so easy. I didnt even think about unRAIDs ability to rebuild a drive. I had visions of trying to format the disk from the command line and copying all the files across from the command line too but wasnt sure if unraid would then accept another disk in that slot. I shall have a go at this later tonight when the preclear finishes. One final question, do i need to format the disk first or will unRAID format and rebuild as one automated step to repairing the array?
February 2, 201214 yr unRAID will partition and format as necessary. To be technical in the rebuild case, unRAID just creates the partition and then directly copies the old partition which also copies the filesystem data. Peter
