Upgrade or good?

Featured Replies

Currently my Unraid server will be on a box with a Ryzen 5 3600. I'm questioning whether I should upgrade or keep it.

My main use case is file storage, maybe a Minecraft server on occasion. I know RAM is already plenty

It depends.  If you are using it for a file server, you'll be fine.  I also think running a Minecraft server would also work well.  If you already have that processor, I would say just give it a try and see how it performs.  Upgrading later isn't too difficult if you find it isn't performant enough.

Personally, I try and find a solution that is powerful enough for what I need, while also being as efficient as possible.   That is one of the reasons why I use xfs for my Array (so it can spin down unused drives).  With the number of drives I have, that saves me about 42 watts alone.

I'm currently using some left over parts (intel core i7-9700k cpu).  This is an 8 core/8 thread CPU that has similar (slightly better) performance as you Ryzen 5.  But your Ryzen 5 has more threads and better power draw.  I think you'll be find with it. I am running Plex, a handful of docker containers and the CPU usage is nominal.

The only other item I will mention is if you plan on using Unraid as a media server.  If you do and plan on transcoding, then an intel CPU with Quicksync has a major advantage over AMD.

Have you noticed any performance issues thus far?

Haven't done any testing yet as I am only just starting, but given your advice I expect it should run fine. Thank you!

I've run Unraid on a 1500X, a 2600, and now on a 5700G and 5600GT.  So I skipped around the 3600 somehow.  🙃

The first 3 CPUs were in my main server, as a NAS and media server with as many as 20 running dockers at a time.  Only played around setting up a VM on the early systems, never giving them much of a workload.

The only concern (as long as you have a healthy amount of DRAM) is the limited number of CPU cores.  If you are just using the Unraid side of things as a NAS, you should have no issues.  Give Cores 0-1 to Unraid and 2-5 for the VM to use.  If Unraid will be doing other tasks as well (media server, download app, etc) you may find a 6 core CPU to be limiting.
