May 9, 200818 yr Hi all! I've been running the free version of unRAID 4.2.1 for quite a while and it is finally time to upgrade to the Pro version and I have a couple of questions. First regarding the flash drive, is there any advantage/disadvantage (other than cost) to putting in say a 4 gig flash drive. If I had the larger flash drive could I, at some point, use the extra space to run a print server and/or something like Smoothwall? Second, I have a new larger drive that I'm going to use as a parity drive and figured that I would go ahead and get that changed out now and need to know the correct procedure to use to just replace the drive. Finally, everything is running great on 4.2.1 when I get the new key I assume it will it work with this version (4.2.1) right? Thanks for and help and especially this great application!
May 9, 200818 yr You will want to upgrade to the 4.3-beta6. To do this you only need to replace the bzroot and bzimage files with those from the 4.3b6 release and reboot. The parity-swap-disable feature was broken in 4.2.1, you really do not want to stay on it. No advantage to a 4 gig drive... Any package you add could be as easily added in a folder on one of your hard-drives, a 1 gig drive is plenty big enough... and hopefully, your hard disks will have lots more free space. To change the parity drive, just stop the array, change the parity drive to the new, and start the array. Parity will be rebuilt. You might be presented with a checkbox to check before the array will start. You probably do not want to use the "Restore" button. It is poorly labeled and it does not restore anything, it just stores a new configuration and then re-calculates parity... although thinking about it, it is almost exactly the same as you will be doing anyway. Typically, the "Restore" button is only used when deleting a drive from the array and you want to re-calculate parity without it. The same "Pro" key works with any version... no need to worry about it. So... download the newest release, unzip it on your PC. Copy just the bzroot znd bzimage files to your flash drive. (that is all you need to upgrade to the current version) You can rename the old bzroot to bzroot421 and the old bzimage to bzimage421, that way you can revert to the 421 release just by renaming them back to their original names if for some reason you need to. You do not need to re-format your flash drive, you do not need to reload it with syslinux... you only need the two files to upgrade to 4.3-beta6 (and the 4.3final will be out any day now from what I've read. It will be as easy to upgrade to it... same two files bzroot and bzimage will be involved in upgrading to it) Joe L.
May 9, 200818 yr Author Thanks Joe L.! Took your suggestion and updated to 4.3b6 following your directions and it worked great. Same with upgrading the parity drive, it is syncing now. Hopefully adding the new controller and drive tomorrow will go half as smooth! Thanks for the advice and assistance!
May 9, 200818 yr When you powered back on after installing the new parity drive, did you have to check the checkbox to re-start? If you remember, it might help the next person who asks. Joe L. (I did a parity swap the last time I changed my parity drive, swappnig the existing parity drive with a data drive, and installing a new parity drive, so I did not get to see the same screen as you) I did take some screen shots to help the next person though.
May 9, 200818 yr Author Joe L., Yes I did have to check the box. Wish I had thought of doing a screen shot, I would have been glad to have taken one for you! Is there an application included that will do a screen shot or did you have to install one? If so, what did you use, I might go ahead and do some when I add my new drive if for nothing else to remind me what I did for next time LOL! Thanks again for your help!

Click on the web-browser to make it the program in "focus." Then press "Alt-printscreen" This puts an image of the specific window in focus in your clipboard. Then, open up paint, paste it from the clipboard, crop as needed (if you desire), save it as a "JPG" (the default is a BMP, a much bigger file) and finally upload it. You don't need to add a program to your PC, it is built in for simple tasks like this. Joe L.
