Approach for switching from physical disk to PCI device passthrough

Featured Replies

I have an Unraid VM running in Proxmox which, in my haste to get started, uses virtual SCSI disks via physical disk passthrough. This approach is less than ideal (no SMART monitoring) and so I want to pass through my entire HBA. I'm still fairly new to virtualization for Unraid and in general, so I'd appreciate input from the more experienced folks in case there's anything I'm missing.

Physical disk → PCI passthrough migration:

  1. Proxmox UI: For each disk, take note of its serial number and corresponding virtual disk #

  2. Unraid UI: Stop array & shut down Unraid VM

  3. Proxmox UI: Remove disk mounts, add PCI passthrough for the HBA, then start Unraid VM.

  4. Unraid UI: New Config, then re-add the disk in the same spots (parity, disk 1, disk 2) based on serial number. Start array.

This seems like a sound plan after researching, but is there anything I'm missing? I have 3 more drives I was planning to add once this was done. Would just starting fresh using these empty drives be a better approach?

Hardware/Setup Details

  • Unraid 7.0.0

  • Proxmox VE 8.3

  • LSI 9207-8i

  • Array: 1 x 24TB parity, 2 x 24TB data

    • Disks are displayed as 0QEMU_QEMU_HARDDISK_drive-scsi## with no SMART data
