My first Build (Need approval on spec list)

Featured Replies

Hey guys, i'm brand new here, and been doing my homework. My goal is "safe file storage", i am a graphics deisgner and videographer handling important files for many different individuals. I dont need tons of space to start but want lots of room to expand. Here is my list to purchase, i want to keep the inital build at around $250-$300. Any input is greatly appreciated! Or at least a thumbs up if i'm on the right track. Thanks guys!

You are on the right track, but we are missing a key bit of information: how many drives do you plan to start with, and how many drives to you envision expanding to in the future?  The case you've chosen maxes out at 15 drives (with slight modification), so I'll assume that is your goal.

The motherboard you've chosen has good specs and is capable of supporting a 15 drive build.  However, it uses the Realtek 8111E NIC (network interface card) which is incompatible with unRAID 4.7.  However, it is fully compatible with the latest unRAID betas and RCs.  Since unRAID 5.0 stable should be just around the corner (fingers crossed!), then I think it is safe to build with that in mind and carry on with this board.  However, if you are uncomfortable using the beta version of unRAID even temporarily, then you will either need to choose another motherboard or buy an Intel PCI NIC ($20 - $30).

The power supply you've chosen is typically one I avoid, simply because it is over powered for 15 green drives, but not powerful enough for 15 7200 RPM drives.  If you plan to have a specific mix of green and 7200 RPM drives, then the CX600 V2 may be appropriate.  However, in general I would recommend the Corsair CX500 V2 for a 15 green drive build, or the Corsair 650TX V2 for a 15 7200 RPM drive build.  See the Power Supply thread for more details.

The CPU and RAM you've chosen are just fine, but they may need to change if you change your motherboard.

Great input Rajahal, thank you. And yes 15 drives is my plan.

I am starting small on the drive load, i have 3 drives at the moment (1 of which is parity) I searched all over for a board that is decently priced and has everything (i thought) i needed. That is the first i've heard about a network interface card being incompatible with unRAID thanks for the heads up.

what are the dangers of running a beta? I'll be using a mix of green drives and 7200's so i'll probly stick with the power supply.

Any Motherboard suggestions that are priced under $100? Looking for 6 sata ports, decent PCIe ports, gigabit ethernet, and on-board video
