September 1, 2025Sep 1 I have been running Freenas / Truenas for about 8 years. I can fumble through it and get it to work but it's more involved than I'd like and I'm trying to simplify my life. I have helped friends with Unraid in the past and I'm finally ready to jump. My current server is Dual Xeon E5-2670 v2 @ 2.50GHz I bought off ebay about 6 years ago. At the time I was chasing thread count for Plex transcoding. I have since built a dedicated Plex transcoding box that can use Intel HD graphics for hardware decoding. Now everything about the server feels like overkill:Dual Xeon e5RaidZ2 pool 10x14tb hddRaidZ2 pool 10x8tb hdd137tb usable, 70tb usedSupermicro SC846 caseThe server has morphed to pretty much exclusively media storage and I run Plex / Kodi off the hardware box I built.I'd like to get back to a simple build that lets me run store media and serve up 6-8 concurrent transcoded streams without stuttering. My plan is to buy new HDD sufficient to migrate data then re-use the 14tb as well. I was hoping to reduce my case footprint but that might not be doable either. Looking for advice on where to start to simplify my build.
