Need advice on ideal drive setup (media + docker apps + backup + Linux ISO seeding)

Featured Replies

Hi Unraid community,

I'm building my first server and need guidance on the optimal drive configuration. I want to make sure I'm setting this up correctly from the start.

My Setup (in progress):

  • Fractal Node 804 case

  • Intel Core Ultra 225

  • 32 GB DDR5 RAM

  • 2x Toshiba MG09 18 TB

Use Cases, for 3 users :

  1. Media (Films/TV)

  2. Linux ISO seeding – I plan to seed Linux distributions on private trackers for weeks/months

  3. Docker applications – Plex, qBittorrent (with ProtonVPN), Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr, n8n, Bitwarden, Recipya, maybe an LLM in the future...

  4. Personal backups – photos, raw/edited videos for YouTube/Instagram (critical data)

Questions on Drive Setup:

Still wondering which HDD / SSD should I buy to start and expand later (hence the post).

BUT I'm guessing:

  • those 2 18TB drives will be used specifically for linux ISOs.

  • I'll need 1 or 2 SSD for Cache and docker data

  • And an array of X+1 HDD for Personal backups (including docker data?)

  1. Configuration for Cache & Docker Data:

    • Should I use 1 or 2 NVMe drives for cache?

    • Should Docker appdata be on the cache pool or separate?

    • In your experience (I know that it depends on use cases but trying to understand as I'll have only 2 NVMe port and another one repurposed as Sata ports

      • What size(s)? (500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB?). I have no idea how much space docker containers can take

      • What speed class? (Gen 3, Gen 4). Does it even matter?

  2. Linux ISO Seeding Strategy:

    • I want to seed Linux ISOs mid/long-term > I understand I should not seed from an array with parity:

      • What's the community best practice?

      • Does anyone seed ISOs indefinitely on their NAS?

Any advice on the ideal configuration for my needs and seeding workflow?

Thanks!
