Unraid and windows server 2008

Featured Replies

Ok I have been using pro 4.3 beta 6 since it came out. Everything is working great except user shares.

I just cannot get it set up the way I want it.

For example I have DVD rips on the unraid server.  My wife has DVD rips also but she has not reason to see my DVD's but i will sometimes need to see hers.

There are people visiting that will be on my network that I would like to give access to only some files  and not see the entire unraid directory.

I dont want people to see folders names that they do not have access to.

etc etc .... Yeah I know I could possibly make it work but I am at the point that setting up a windows server may just be easier.

So before I even get started is what i want to do possible.

My unraid server has a second nic (abit ab9) so I would like to hook a crossover cable to a dedicated windows server (2nd nic) and setup user persmissions the way I want.  This way anyone who want to access anything on the unraid server has to go thru the windows server.

Am I on the right track?

Will this work with a unraid server? I assume I could just turn user shares off and set it all up thru windows server

And no I have no idea how to do this but I am willing to figure it all out.

Thoughts?  I cannot be the only one who wants more control out of their unraid user settings.

I'll take a look at it sometime this week.

Off the top of my head, I'd say that you can't actually setup permissions, because unraid does not use NTFS.

BUT... you might be able to setup shares on the windows server that point to the unraid shares... you could set filesharing permissions (but not security) this way, if that would work.

I think you'd want to only have the crossover cable connected directly to the win2k8 machine, otherwise anyone could get into the unraid tower and just bypass the win2k8 system by connecting in to the other NIC.

For some reason I actually THOUGHT that unraid had shares that were based on users... but I never actually tried to use that, so I could be way off.

It does, but not in the free version.

You can. For every share on the network you can specify the mode (READ-WRITE, or READ-ONLY, READ-WRITE-HIDDEN, or READ-ONLY-HIDDEN) and give a list of users for that mode.  You can also list exceptions for specific users. In addition, you can list specific users who are allowed, or disallowed.

So, a folder can be read-only for your wife, read-write for you and not accessible, or even visible by guests.

See the  screen-capture below. (My wife and I are the only two on my media center, so I don't have the need for the security you do, but it is there.)
