Advice for first build

Featured Replies

What is your budget?  Around 300-600 with out drives

How many drives do you want your server to be able to support and how much capacity do you need?

More the merrier.  I have 2 DNS-323 with 2TB drives I will eventually use, and i just ordered 2x3TB Segate Baracudas http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=66009&vpn=ST3000DM001&manufacture=Seagate&promoid=1265

Is expandability important to you  Yes, as the media grows so will my capacity needs.

Are you interested in running any unRAID Add Ons (see here)? Yes,  SABnzbd / CouchPotato / SickBeard / transmission.. possibly audio server in the future.

Do you want to run green/low power drives or faster 7200 rpm drives?  Probably a mix since i have both.

Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build?

        4-6 x 2TB WD Green drives.

          2 x  3TB Segate Baracudas

          Antec 300 case (may re-use..may get a new ones..undecided)

For ordering parts it will most likely be form new egg or ncix if anyone knows of any good compatible setups.

What type of processor should I be looking at for a NAS with a few apps/services running?  It will possibly be streaming to 3 sources at once.

i'm working on replacing my small army of DNS-323s with an all in one solution with expanded capacity.

I was previously looking at qnap and synology boxes how ever a PC solution will probably save me a good 300-400$.  Would there be a big difference in power consumption in a PC over the appliance nas?

Any advice/recommendations would be appreciated!

I'd go with the Core i3-3220 and 8GB of RAM. For the motherboard see if there are any on sale on the sites you are looking at buying from. Pretty much any motherboard will be compatible.

Since you are looking for expandability, go with a larger power supply now so you don't have to upgrade later. Also, go with a case that has all 5.25 bays in it like the Antec Nine Hundred so you can add 5 in 3 cages. Sounds like you've got 8 drives already so you may want to get some off the bat if you have the money. I like the Supermicro 5 in 3 cages personally. I have two.

For controller cards go with the Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 or the IBM m1015. Check Monoprice for good prices on the breakout cables for the controllers.

So my path has shifted.. realistically i think 8 drives will be plenty for a while.

Intel BOXDH61BEB3 mATX LGA1155 H61 Express DDR3 PCI-E16 1PCI-E Video Sound GBLAN B3 Motherboard -  $84.99

Corsair Professional HX650W 650W ATX 12V 52A 24PIN ATX Modular Power Supply Active PFC 120mm Fan- $99.99

Total with sata cables  $484.63  (before tax/shipping)

the motherboard can handle 6x 6gb sata ports.  I can find a cheaper controller card to expand it to 8.

Would it be worth getting  cheap ssd as a cache drive?

Any thoughts or recommendations on this setup before i click buy now.. :)

PC above + UnRaid Os. 119$  = 610 ish. (plus tax/shipping for parts)

QNAP TS-419PII  - 4 bay nas = 469

Synology DS1812+  8 bay nas  = 999  (similair raid setup to unraid.)

one advantage of appliance is it takes less power.. how ever is it worth a few hundred more..

One more set of options if i go unraid.

Rosewill HIVE Series HIVE-550 550W Continuous @40°C, 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified, Modular Design, Single +12V Rail, ATX12V v2.31/EPS12V v2.92, SLI Ready, CrossFire Ready, Active-PFC Power Supply

ASRock H77 Pro4-M LGA 1155 Intel H77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core i3-3220T Ivy Bridge 2.8GHz LGA 1155 35W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2500

So my new option included a slow but lower power cpu(35W opposed to 95w) and a board with 8 stock stata ports. which would be ideal. As far as i know everything should be compatible (network with the beta build..) rest sounds safe.

IS there any other flaws or things to consider before I order?  I'm itching to get started and have been going crazy with changing my mind every hour... so any help is greatly appreciated!!!
