[SOLVED] how to preclear new disk?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am trying to add new 2TB WD disk to my array. This disk is showing as sde on my system. Please see below attached image.

When tried to preclear this disk  with the following command - preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sde Getting following error:

"Sorry: /dev/sde/ does not exist as a block device

Clearing will NOT be performed"

I am currently running unraid 5.0-beta14 and Preclear 1.13

Please help me to identify what i am doing wrong with pre clearing this new drive.

Thanks,

Vijay.

Type

preclear_disk.sh -l

to see the available disks and their affiliated devices.

Device names can change from one boot to the next. They are assigned as devices spin up and initialize.  Is the disk still /dev/sde ??

You MUST use the model/serial number to make sure it is still the disk you intend to clear..

Also, you cannot use the preclear script on a disk already assigned to the array.  (That may likely be the reason for your error. )  You must un-assign it before using the preclear script on it.  (It is to keep you from shooting yourself in the foot)

Again, use

preclear_disk.sh -l

to see a list of the disks not assigned to the array (and possible disks to clear)

One last thing...  The error message you posted says "/dev/sde/" does not exist.  Did you enter the trailing "/"

If so, dont.      There is no device /dev/sde/

There could be a device /dev/sde

(no trailing "/")

Thanks Joe for quick reply!!

Preclear_disk.sh -l shows there are no un-assigned disks.

root@MediaServer:/boot# preclear_disk.sh -l

====================================1.13

Disks not assigned to the unRAID array

  (potential candidates for clearing)

========================================

No un-assigned disks detected

Please advise how can i un-assign drive sde to proceed with pre-clear.

Stop the array, un-assign the disk.

Thanks again Joe!!

After un-assigned the disk, It allowed me to run pre-clear.

It just started pre-clearing.

:)

Joe,

Quick question? How can i re-arrange my disks?. I mean.. currently i have:

Disk1 is Parity drive

Disk 2 is 2 tB drive

Disk3 is 1 tb drive

Disk4 is 1tb drive and

Disk5 will be new 2tb drive (after pre-clear).

I just want to arrange them as:

Disk1 is Parity drive

Disk 2 is 2 tB drive

Disk3 should be 2 tb drive (new drive after pre-clear))

Disk4 should be 1tb drive and

Disk5 should be 1tb drive.

Thanks,

Vijay.
