[solved] trying to replace an old drive with a new one

Featured Replies

So i got a shiny new hard drive to replace an old IDE one.

I did the pre-clear

Mounted it on my unraid server

Copied all the content from my old IDE to the new drive

Stopped the array and tried to remove the IDE drive from the list and move the new SATA to it's location.

It tells me too many errors and disks missing, i can't start the array.

How can I do this and have it rebuild parity from scratch?

Just set a new disk configuration.

Since you did not bother to tell us which version of unRAID you are running, you'll need to look that up yourself.  It is different in earlier versions than in later.

This is the WRONG way to replace an older drive with a new.    If you, by any chance did not properly format the new drive, it will be erased (re-partitioned and re-formatted) when you attempt to create a new config.

You should have just

Stopped the array, assigned the new drive to the slot occupied by the old, and then started the array.  unRAID would have re-constructed the old data onto the new disk.

I hope you got the partition and formatting correct.  If not, don't get rid of your old IDE drive... It might be the only copy of your data when you are done.

Alright, the IDE drive is still in there. I put everything back the way it was and it's still running but I do want to remove it from the array.

So i'm running 5.0 rc5, not sure where to find the new "disk configuration". I'm in the wiki looking for it now.

Cool that did it, i'm back online and tested some random files on that drive. still working fine

Thanks, I got another to do. I'll make sure to do a parity check first and if all checks out remove one drive and reconstruct the other.
