December 23, 201213 yr Hello! I know that this has been asked previously, but I've seen various recommendations on what to do and I'm slightly confused so I want to make sure I do this the best way before proceeding. I bought a 3TB drive to add to my UnRAID server, and what I want to do is replace my Disk 1 (2TB drive) with this new 3TB drive, copying all the data from the 2TB drive to this new 3TB drive and then reassigning the 2TB drive back to the array as another disk. What I was going to do was simply stop the array, and then select the new 3TB drive from the drop down list for Disk 1, then restart the array and allow the disk to be rebuilt from parity. Then after that was complete, I would format the 2TB drive and make it Disk 7. Does this seem like the best way to do this? Does anyone have an idea if this will work the way I am hoping it will, or if there is a better way to do this? I would greatly appreciate any help I can get before jumping into this! Thank you!
December 24, 201213 yr Yes, that's what you do. You can also run the preclear_script on the 2T before you add it back to the array as the new drive so that the array isn't offline while unRAID clears it. There is a switch to clear only and not do the pre-read and post-read.
December 24, 201213 yr Author Great! That is what I was hoping, but I never want to take a risk of doing something with the possibility of losing data! Thank you for the post and I'll stop back if I have any issues, which I don't anticipate happening now.
December 24, 201213 yr Dont forget your largest drive must be your Parity drive. This will only work if your parity drive is already 3TB or larger (sorry if you mentioned this and i missed it)
December 27, 201213 yr Author Dont forget your largest drive must be your Parity drive. This will only work if your parity drive is already 3TB or larger (sorry if you mentioned this and i missed it) Thank you for the comment! I actually bought two 3TB drives for that exact purpose so that I could replace my old 2TB parity drive with a 3TB drive, and then add the second 3TB drive as a data drive. I appreciate the heads up! OP, when you say 'drive 1' do you mean the parity drive? By "Disk 1" I mean the disk that is assigned to "Disk 1" in the UnRAID Web GUI. Parity is listed as parity, then Disk 1, 2, 3, etc.
