February 24, 201313 yr Unraid server basic 5.0-rc8a I have a relatively new WD 2TB disk which I was using in a media centre. I know the disk is good because I can put it back in the media centre (win7 64 bit) and its working. I've had a 250Gb disk in the slot up till now and that is identified by unraid ok so the hardware for the slot should be fine. Is there something extra that needs to be done with RC to get it to spot a new disk? The chassis is a HP N40L if that helps. Thanks, Rob.
February 24, 201313 yr you have to stop the arrray to make changes to the disk assignments, did you do that?
February 24, 201313 yr Author Thanks for the reply. Yes, I stopped the array, shutdown the server and fitted the new disk. I then powered it back up expecting to see the disk appear as I formatted but no dice. Running dmesg shows all for SATA drives present but nothing on the web interface. I'm running unmenu, could it be that? Also the disk was previously windows. Do I need to format it with a different file type before it will show up? Thanks, Rob.
February 24, 201313 yr you must STOP the array before you can assign a new disk to the array. When you stop the array, a disk assignment page will allow you to assign the new disk in one of the logical data disk assignment positions. Did you get to the disk assignment page? What happens when you click on one of the drop-downs? The disk will be completely erased and re-partitioned by unRAID. Any previous content will be lost, erased, gone... Just be aware, as soon as you assign the disk to unAID it will no longer be recognized by windows. You do not need to format it in any way until AFTER it has been assigned to the unRAID array. After assigning it, if not pre-cleared, unRAID will clear it for you wihile the array is kept off-line. This will take 4 to 6 hours or more for a large disk. After it is zeroed, then the array will start and it will show as unformatted. At that time a "Format" button will appear. At that time, you can let unRAID format the disk. It will only take a few minutes at that time. unMENU has nothing to do with weather the disk will be seen or not. However, it can let you see if it is seen by unRAID. Does the disk show in the "unassigned disks" section of the unMENU web-page? If not, it is not available for assignment (and probably not seen by the motherboard's BIOS) Did you see the SATA port in the syslog? or the actual disk make/model/serial number? Since you've not yet attached a copy of the syslog, nobody can help you much more in the analysis. You can use the "syslog" link in unMENU to download a copy of the syslog for analysis. Attach it to your next post. Joe L.
February 24, 201313 yr If you are using the basic unRAID and already have two data disks assigned, you'll not be able to assign a third data disk. You should be able to use the drop-down list on one of the data disks to select the 2TB drive instead of the one currently assigned. When you then start the array, the older disk's contents will be reconstructed onto the newer 2TB disk. Joe L.
February 25, 201313 yr Author Thanks both of you for your replies. I'm on an ipad most of the time so logs are difficult to get. As soon as I get my desktop started up this week I'll post some logs. Cheers, Rob.
