Unraid Won't Boot - "Boot Failure - Insert System Disk and Press Enter"

Featured Replies

I believe I am on 4.5.6 of Unraid, with the Pro License. I did an orderly shutdown of the system before leaving for vacation, now it will not boot. Gives the message per the subject line.

Info to consider:

  • I don't recall seeing this, it's been so long since I looked at the screen on boot. But when booting, the Bios message does say at one point "This version only supports hard Disks and CD Rom Drives".
  • I booted into the Bios and the First Boot option is set to USB-HDD. Boot other device is enabled
  • The USB is a Sandisk Cruzer 1GB. It is readable via windows in my desktop PC.
  • The orange light on the drive does flash while booting the Unraid server, which makes me think the USB port is working. I did try other USB ports.
  • The server motherboard is an ABIT unit
  • I have attached the log which is dated the day I downed the server
  • I did an error check from the properties/tools from my deskstop on the USB drive, and it came up with no errors

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Sounds to me like your on the right track as far as checking the BIOS. Not sure which MB your using, but if there is a setting for removable drives you may need to disable that also so it will pick up the USB thumb drive as a hard drive vise identifying it as a removable drive.

Can you try booting your workstation from the USB drive?  It's an easy way to check and see if it's still bootable.

Well, huh...turns out there are 2 places in Bios I need to set it up.

I had checked First Boot Drive, and it was at USB-FDD. But, there is ALSO a priority boot drive setting. So even though First Boot Drive was set to USB-FDD, I also needed to set Priority Drive order to have the USB-FDD as first. It had moved to last.

Don't know why it changed or why there are two different places. :o  But it's good to go.

Thanks for the help. It prompted me back into Bios again.

Your CMOS battery on the MB may be just about dead.  When powered off, it might again forget  the boot device.

Great point Joe L.

Ewinr, glad it was an easy fix.
