[Solved] Moving drives around

Featured Replies

My current setup is a vSphere server with 19 total drives in it. I am currently running out of space. My thoughts are to split the vSphere server off into another case and use the existing setup for my NAS while upgrading the drives over time. To do all of this is going to take time just because of the logistics of moving that many VM's and data around without losing anything of missing a beat. One question on unRaid though, I know some NAS devices are pretty easy on moving drives around but other systems are not forgiving. If I use something like the onboard SATA with a mix of an 8 port JBOD card and move drives around does it just figure it out or not? Of course I could tag the drives before moving them but it would be easier to not have to.

you must know the disks serial numbers.  If you do not, it is time to get them.  It is time to tag the drives (with at least the last 4 characters of their serial numbers)

Take a screen shot of the disk assignment page.  print it for reference Save a copy of your syslog.  It has a device inventory in it with the serial numbers.  You'll need to match the logical slot assignments with the physical serial numbers of the disks if unRAID does not do it on its own.

On older versions of unRAID, the disks were tracked based on the disk controller port they were connected to.  On newer versions, they are tracked by their serial number.

You did not bother to specify which version of unRAID you are running, so I cannot give you any more specific advice.

I have not even installed it yet. I plan on buying the pro version this month.

Basically, on the 4.7 version and prior as long as you keep using the same disk controller ports and the location of the parity disk is not changed, the software figures it out for the data disks.

On the 5.0-rc version, the disks are tracked by their model/serial numbers, so as long as the BIOS on the MB can see the disks, it will figure it out as long as the array "super.dat" file on the USB flash drive is readable.  If it is not, then you must re-assign the physical disks to their logical assignments after telling the software you are setting up a new disk configuration.  It is not difficult, and most of us label the physical disks with the last few characters of their serial number to make maintenance easier.  (since physical location is not really an issue)

Marking this solved then.
