October 20, 200817 yr hi, I want to replace a drive with a bigger one, Replace a single disk with a bigger one This is the case where you are replacing a single small disk with a bigger one: Stop the array. Power down the unit. Replace smaller disk with new bigger disk. Power up the unit. Start the array. correct, but I also will be taking out the cache drive of the system, can I just unassigned it and then just remove it? also the reason that I was thinking on taking the cache off is that I had seem any benefit, any suggestions about this, thx again, sam
October 20, 200817 yr In general, it is always best to do one operation at a time. I would Stop the array, un-assign the Cache disk, Reboot and make sure everything looks right in the configuration tabs of the web management page. Then shut down and add the new drive, remove (or unhook) the old drive and optionally the Cache drive, and boot again. Here's a link to a great tutorial with screen shots. As to the Cache drive, it is a great benefit if you have a Pro license and include it with a User Share. Writes to the User Share are much faster. It has no benefit to writes directly to disks. Here's a link to the FAQ, Cache drive section.
October 22, 200817 yr You should consider running some sort of burn in procedure on a new drive before adding it to your array. The incidence of failure for brand new drives is much higher than drives that have "driven around the block".
