Bad drive?

Featured Replies

Every few days one of my drives gets a red dot next to it and its error count is something like 4.  I understand that means it had 4 write errors?  This has happened today for the third time.  The first two times I unassigned the drive then reassigned it and rebuilt it from parity.  Both times there were no errors during rebuilding.  This time I decided to run smartctl on it and see what is going on.  The command errored out and when I forced it to ignore errors with "-T verypermissive" it came back that smart monitoring wasn't even on.  I tried to turn it on with "-s on" but that came back with errors too.

After rebooting the computer smartctl ran fine.  I noticed that the UDMA_CRC_Error_Count is 44.  The wiki suggested this could indicate bad cabling.  I will swap cables with a different drive and see if that helps.  Does anyone have any other idea what the problem could be?  Why would unraid show write errors but smartctl show Reallocated_Sector_Ct to be 0?

The error count would be of "read" errors, not write errors, although you have them too, since when a "write" fails, the drive is taken out of service (and thus the "red" indicator)

It could easily be the cable.  At least it is the quickest to change.

Are you using an 80 conductor cable? (you should)

Are you using a "round" cable? (You should not)

To get any more help you will need to post a syslog from the time period where the errors occurred, before you reboot you can capture a copy of it.

Instructions in the wiki under troubleshooting.
