Issue accessing my share via Symbolic Link [Solved]

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I've been noodling about this for a few days and figured I would reach our for some support. :)

My setup consists of the following:

1 Windows Server running Win 8.1 (Sickbeard,SAB,Headphones etc)

1 HP MicroServer running unRaid 5.0

I've created a share on my unRaid and created a Symbolic Link in windows so that SickBeard could read and write to the unraid share. Everything was working as expected until a few days ago when suddenly none of my apps can seem to write to the share via the symbolic link.

I get errors like the following:

"Unable to create the folder d:\towermedia\tv\Sherlock, can't add the show"

I have tried the following:

1) Rebuilt the Symlink

2) Ran the permissions script under "new Permissions" to set everything to nobody

3) Set the share to private and then back to public to force a rewrite of the ACLs

4) Rebooted all servers.

Is there anything I can do to try and narrow down what is going on here? I can access the share with 0 issues using the UNC path of \\tower\media, but Sickbeard and the like don't support network shares natively, hence the symlink.

I can also browse the symlink from windows explorer and create/delete/edit folders to my hearts content. The only change I have made is update from Windows 8 to 8.1 on my server but I can't see any changes to how symlinks behave in the change notes.

Try writing to the share via UNC i.e. \\unraidip\path\to\share

Thanks for the reply!

Reading and writing to the share via UNC path works, but that's not supported by sickbeard or any of my other apps. My concern is that up until about a week ago, I was able to create a Symlink to the UNC path and that worked just fine.

Now for some reason NONE of my apps can write to the symlink despite the fact that I can. I can troubleshoot the windows side, but I'm still new with unRaid. Mostly looking for ways to confirm that my share and file permissions on the unRaid side aren't at fault here.

Thanks!

I stopped my array, removed my cache drive and did a cold shutdown of the UnRaid OS. After restarting I started the array without the cache drive and now all is well.

I'm guessing maybe my cache drive had some unforeseen issues. :)

Spoke too soon. it worked for about 5 mins and now is no longer working again.

I would love to hear any suggestions that folks may have. :)

So here's an interesting new development. Rebooting my array gets things working as expected for about 5 mins and then i'm back to the broken state. I'm about to wipe my flash and reinstall unraid/copy my config folder back in.

I'll reply back once that's done.

Try mapping the share to a drive letter rather than using a symlink

Hi folks.

I thought I would provide an update and close the thread. I was unfortunately unable to ever solve the issue. My guess is something changed in Win 8.1 and I may one day try to track it down, but for now I just installed SAB on my unraid box and all is well. Sorry I left it open for so long!
