Benefit of using preclear when replacing a failed drive with a larger one?

Featured Replies

Is there an additional benefit of using preclear when replacing a failed drive with a larger one? I mean besides the obvious "making sure the drive is fine".

As an example when replacing a 1TB failed drive with a 2TB drive, will the rebuild go faster or simply skip to the end after the first 1TB has been processed when using a precleared replacement drive?

That is the only advantage when replacing a failed drive.    It does not speed up the process of re-constructing the replacement.

However.... making sure the drive is OK is a HUGE advantage, since roughly one out of five "new" drives seem to have issues with un-readable sectors.  (feeling lucky?)

;) thanx for the quick reply. I'm all preclear (my nro 1 for an integrated unRAID feature), I was just wondering about the potential additional benefit.

I'm currently rebuilding 1TB -> 2TB and I'm seeing rebuild speed way lower than the parity check speeds (20MBps vs 55Mbps) and I was wondering whether it would speed up or even skip after the first 1TB since I was using a precleared replacement drive.

And if you wonder why on earth 2TB, well I'm kicking myself too for leaving my old rig on 4.7. Read the recommendation about not doing an 4.7 -> 5.0 upgrade while having a failed drive in the system.
