February 23, 201412 yr Hi everyone, I'm currently building my first NAS but I have a few questions about usability/security. I understand how plex media server works and that port forwarding to allow remote access to my unRAID box is a big no-no, but I'd like to find a way to achieve this while still keeping my box secure. I've done a lot of research and a lot of people suggest having a separate box (obviously not an unRAID box) to to your out-bound file sending. I don't want to have to build another server just to transcode and send data to devices outside of my network so... Does anybody have any suggestions as to how I can achieve this securely with or without unRAID/plex. So far I have come up with a few possible ideas. I am not completely clueless, but I am by no means an expert so please excuse any "not-so-bright" ideas. 1. Install Plex media player on an older laptop that I have running ubuntu and just use the unRAID box as storage to access the files. I understand that ubuntu is more secure, but would it be possible to use the laptop and have the unRAID box do the heavy work (aka transcoding). Also, as a side-note, will this method work with my torrent client as well? 2. Go with something else, possibly ubuntu server or just use the hardware I planned for the unRAID box as a PC (linux or windows). I really like how unRAID works, which is the main reason I don't like this idea. Any thoughts? Thanks for reading...I'm open to any suggestions, so feel free to enlighten me. btw: the verification feature on these forums is great...I've never seen it before.
