unRAID box w/ HTPC for streaming/transcoding

Featured Replies

So I think I've come to my final build idea.  I have some of the parts already, but can still return if anybody has a better option.  I'm trying to accomplish two things: (1)dedicated NAS with the unRAID box for less stress on hardware and (2)no exposure of unRAID box to the interwebs.

I plan on isolating the unRAID box, as to eliminate any outward facing connections (plex).  For the purposes to streaming/transcoding to both in-network and out-of-network devices, I plan to build another box which may or may not be a HTPC (my Samsung TV has the plex app already).

My layout (I'm pretty sure this is possible, but any advice would be great):

  • cat6 from unRAID box to HTPC w/ Plex Media Server.  This is the area that I'm not to sure about.  I've seen a few threads that go over this, but is it still possible?  The HTPC will have read only access.
  • unRAID hardwired into network.  It will not be running any plugins on the unRAID, which should help with security
  • TV hard-wired into network to allow me to watch 1080p rips
  • any management or writing will be done from an old box running ubuntu.  This is where I get dumb: does this mean that the unRAID box or the ubuntu box will be doing the work for writing?

Now for the good stuff:

unRAID box

HTPC

So my two questions are:

[*]will this setup work?

[*]is the hardware able to handle that, or do you have any suggestions?
