March 27, 201412 yr I understand that writing to the array will be slow because of parity calculation, but this is about my cache drive. If I copy a file to my cache drive via SMB, I get about 30-40MB/s average transfer from my Win8 machine. If I ftp and upload to /mnt/cache, I get 80-100MB/s average transfer from the same Win8 machine. I can also copy files to a Windows Server VM (hosted on another server in my house) at 80-100MB/s as well, so I don't believe it's my Win8 machine. I'm currently running 5.0.4. I don't see anything in changelog for 5.0.5 that will make any difference as far as SMB goes. Any ideas/suggestions?
March 27, 201412 yr There are several threads about this. Seems to be normal behavior related to the SAMBA protocol. The speedsters seem to prefer FTP.
March 27, 201412 yr Author That doesn't really make any sense. I like unraid and purchased pro, but this issue and the answer of "it's samba" sounds like a cop-out. I can copy a file to a Linux virtual machine (hosted on the same physical server as the Windows Server vm referenced above) via samba and I get 80MB/s.
March 27, 201412 yr I'm not sure there's consensus about the speed difference...but there are anecdotes. Here's an example: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=28429.0
April 1, 201412 yr Author Turns out I was right. Samba "just being slow" is a cop-out. I found a thread talking about issues with Realtek NICs and Samba performance and lack of driver support from Realtek. I purchased an Intel Pro/1000 GT, got it today, put it in, disabled the onboard Realtek nic and now cache drive transfers are steady at 85MB/s, to array transfers are 60-65MB/s and from array transfers are 85MBs. Anyone who says unRaid is slow is only correct if they are expecting 200-300MB/s speeds that can ONLY be achieved by hardware raid systems.

I'd not realized the problem had been narrowed to Realtek NICs and drviers support.
