Strange Permission folder problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am newbie of unRaid. Just create an unRaid tower and copied some of my files to it.

unRaid 4.4.2 Pro

3 1TB (SATA)+ 1 30GB(IDE, cache)

I got a strange problem with it. When I copied files to the server, I was prompted several times. It complains certain directories cannot be created because of the permission reason. I have to skip those folders and finish the copy.

When I finished, I found that I could not enter those folders. A folder name is Disney. It shows "access is denied". I tried several solution and got very strange result.

I telnet to unRaid and cd into mnt/disk2/.... I can use mv to change the name of the directory from Disney to other names such as Disney1 etc. Then I can access all files of that folder in Vista. However, I cannot change the name back to Disney in Vista. I can still change the name back to Disney in unRaid Linux. But after that, I cannot access any file in Disney again. It seems that the name "Disney" was fobidden in Vista.

Can anyone give me a hint? Thanks.

Nobody gets a clue? Let me restate the problem:

1. Cannot create a folder with a specific name (say Disney) in Vista. Also cannot change the name of another folder to such a name. But can create a folder with any other name.

2. Can create a folder or rename another folder to such a name in telnet unRaid.

3. A folder with such a name (created or renamed in telnet unRaid) is not accessible in Vista.

BTW, the permissions of the folder/parent folder are Ok in Linux. But cannot change in Vista.

Can anyone give me a help?

in linux, do the following:

ls -l /mnt/user/Disney

It is likely a directory permissions issue that you created when you copied the folder from windows originally.

I have no problem creating a "Disney" folder from my Vista laptop on the unRAID server.

Thank you for your reply. It is not because of this specific name. It happened in quite a few directories. It likes that you cannot use a certain name in a certain folder.

My guess is that when I copy Disney to unRaid first time, it fails for some reason. Then it creates a "hidden" directory or link or what ever stuff in unRaid which cannot even be seen in Linux (I cannot see it even with ls -la). But Vista for some reason can "see" it and prevent it to be accessed.

Here is my ls -la result in the directory where I cannot use Disney:

root@LeiServer:/mnt/disk2/Video/Lena# ls -la

total 3

drwx--xrwx  9 root root  224 Jan 27 11:55 ./

drwx--x--x 10 root root  256 Jan 26 09:13 ../

drwx--x--x  3 root root  280 Jan 26 05:27 Barbie/

drwxr-xr-x  2 root root  48 Jan 27 11:55 Disney/

drwx--x--x  2 root root 3464 Jan 26 22:09 Disney1/

drwx--x--x  3 root root  80 Jan 26 21:17 Dora/

drwx--x--x  2 root root  112 Jan 26 05:51 IceAge/

drwx--x--x  2 root root  232 Jan 26 05:59 Movie/

drwx--x--x  4 root root  176 Jan 26 06:03 Vege\ Tale/

Now the Disney1 has all the files original in Disney. I can open Disney1 but not Disney. If I rename Disney1 to Disney, I cannot open it in Vista. I have no problem to access any file in Disney in Linux.

I guess it could be a bug in ReiserFs file system?

Problem solved. It seems that it is the problem of Vista. After I reboot Vista, all wierd things gone.
