Freezes every time I format.

Hello, I have been trying to get this thing up and running for hours.  I am running the 4.4.2 version of unRaid with the Syslinux 3.63.  I can get the system to boot up, and I can get to the web interface.  I assign my drives, 1 parity and 2 storage, start the array, and click format.  The page refreshes and says "Formatting".  Then the system freezes.  I can no longer type at the console, or get to the web interface.  I am unable to shut it down properly to get the log files.  After I shut the machine off and reboot it, it hangs.  I cannot get to the console after that in order to get the logs.  I literally have to start all over (format the thumb drive, load boot, extract system etc)  The system will boot again, and the cycle starts. I just can't format the drives and get this thing running!

To help you, we need to see your syslog, so please see my sig for the Troubleshooting link, for help with capturing a syslog.

I would try bringing up one drive first, with no parity drive.  Then add the parity drive, and let it start a parity sync.  Finally, add the second drive.  And try to capture a syslog before and after each of these operations.  Grab the first syslog as soon as it boots, before anything else.  Can you give us some details about your hardware setup?

Thanks for the reply.  I have captured 2 log files, unfortunately the upload box is full.  I can tell you that I brought the 1 disk up like you suggested, clicked format and it froze.  Here is a snip it from the log (starts after successful boot) and a bit about my system:

Mobo: Asus PC4-800e Deluxe

Intel P4 3.0gHz

2 gig ram

I'm trying to use 3 of the same drive: IDE Maxtor 200GB

Please let me know if you need additional information.  Thanks very much.  I can't wait to get this running!

oh yeah, after all this happens and I reboot, it hangs at:  "unpacking initramfs..."

  • Author

or it hangs at the: "ACPI: Uing IOAPIC for interrupt routing"

You need to post the entire syslog.  Use pastebin.

Run a memory test (on the boot menu there is an option to run it)

Provide very detailed informaiton about your system:

Motherboard:  P4C800-E Deluxe

Memory 2G (Brand/Speed?)

Add-on Controllers

Version of unRAID

Addons (if any)

  Packages

  Anything else?   (Linux modprobes, etc.)

Backplanes / Docks

(I used a P4C800 Deluxe when I first started using unRAID and it worked fine.  Hopefully we can get you up and working)

Thanks and sorry, I wasn't aware of pastebin.  Here is a link to it: http://pastebin.com/m426e49c8

Version of unRAID: 4.4.2

Addons (if any) : none

I'm still running the memtest, it is taking longer then I thought it would.  I've never run that before, how many tests does it need to complete?  It has gone through 7 and no errors yet...

Thanks

Ok, memetest complete, no errors.

I don't see anything unusual.  RobJ is much better at reading these logs.  I'll defer to him.

One quick note, I just took out the Maxtor drives, put 1 WD Sata 500 in.  Ran the program, formatted it and everything seems to run fine.  I'm going to go ahead and add a second disk (of the same) then the parity and try it.  Could the disks not be compatible or something?  Do they need to be zeroed out before trying them?  The WD drive was straight out of a box, brand new.

The syslog does show a couple of issues.  The first is that the CPU is a 3.0Ghz Pentium overclocked to 3.6Ghz.  The failure to boot errors (hangs at "ACPI: Using IOAPIC for interrupt routing" and "unpacking initramfs...") lead me to think the system may not be stable at 3.6Ghz, so I would recommend returning to stock values in the BIOS CPU settings, until everything is working perfectly.  Then you can experiment with a little overclocking (but I would not recommend it).  A fast CPU is of little benefit with unRAID, stability is much more important.

The third Maxtor (Maxtor 6L200P0, serial ending in 01H, sole drive on its cable, is reporting the following:

hdc: host side 80-wire cable detection failed, limiting max speed to UDMA33

That indicates a very bad cable, or a 40-wire cable (wrong for modern drives), which could very well have been causing considerable problems with your initial runs with all 3 drives assigned.  Just replace the cable with a good flat 80-wire cable.

The messages at the end of the syslog, and in the extract in the third post, are very normal, for a single assigned drive that has not been formatted yet.  It looks like it is waiting for permission to format it, with no further errors or any logged messages.  Since you indicated that you "clicked format and it froze", I have to suspect a problem with the drive.  I recommend getting SMART reports for all 3 drives, see the Troubleshooting page, Obtaining a SMART report section.  Also, a later syslog would be useful.

All 3 drives already have a single partition on them, perhaps from the initial attempt to get the array up.

It's good that a first memory test passed, however a really thorough memory test takes a very long time, is run all night, over and over.  When you have time, I would retest memory overnight.  Some flaky memory problems don't show up immediately, or are very infrequent.

Thanks for the reply!  I reset the BIOS to factory default and set up to boot from the thumb drive.  I was just trying to use the Maxtor as a test before I bought the unRaid software, but after reading your post I just went ahead and installed my permanent disks, new WD 500gb sata drives.  The drives formatted and mounted without a hitch.  Everything appears to be running fine.  I did have one hiccup.  After setting up a user share and copying some data, I went back to the home screen of the web utility and one of the drives said unformatted.  I couldn't stop the array from the web at that point, so I used the console.  Rebooted and it was all fine.  I will capture the log from that before I reboot next time.  I was dead tired and simply forgot.

Thanks very very much. I appreciate your willingness to help.
